FrontStreet Coffee - Sidamo Region Introduction
Sidamo is the southernmost coffee-producing region in Ethiopia, with altitudes ranging from 4,600 to 7,200 feet. In Sidamo's sun-drying fields, coffee is placed in wooden racks with hemp nets. Workers take turns under the scorching sun to manually stir the coffee at regular intervals. Sun-dried Sidamo coffee is mostly exported with a G4 grade designation. Washed Sidamo coffee, due to its more refined processing compared to sun-drying, is predominantly exported with a G2 grade.
Sidamo coffee exhibits considerable flavor diversity. Different soil types, microclimates, and countless native coffee varieties contribute to this diversity. The region features towering mountains, highlands, plateaus, valleys, and plains with diverse topography. The land consists of fertile, well-drained volcanic soil with depths of nearly two meters. The surface soil appears dark brown or brown.
The region's greatest advantage lies in maintaining soil fertility through the circulation of organic matter, using fallen leaves from surrounding trees or plant roots as fertilizer. This creates distinct differences and characteristics in the coffee produced by various towns.
Sidamo green coffee beans are slightly grayish, with some areas having coarse beans while others have fine ones. They possess both gentle and bright acidity, appropriate body thickness, sweet and spicy flavors, making them one of the garden coffees from Ethiopia's southern highlands. Unlike typical African coffees, Sidamo has clear fruit acidity, a smooth mouthfeel, and delicate floral and herbal aromas.
Guji Region and Hambella
Guji is Ethiopia's largest coffee-producing region, and the "Horse Champion" variety comes from one of Guji's sub-regions, Hambella.
Hambella is administered by Ethiopia's southernmost administrative state, Oromiyaa. To the west, it faces the Kochore sub-region of the Yirgacheffe region across mountains. It borders Shakiso to the east, Uraga to the south, and Kercha to the north. Shakiso, Uraga, and Kercha are all sub-regions of the Guji coffee region. According to statistics, there are approximately 20 processing plants within Hambella, distributed across different villages and estates in the sub-region, varying in scale.
The Guji Zone was designated as an independent producing region by the ECX (Ethiopian Commodity Exchange) in 2010 due to its superior geographical location and cupping quality. Shakiso is the most attractive micro-region within the Guji region, located southeast of Yirgacheffe with an average altitude above 1,800 meters.
Knowledge point: Shakisso (sometimes spelled Shakiso) is the most noteworthy micro-region within the Sidamo region.
