FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Tanzanian Coffee
Kilimanjaro coffee from Tanzania, with its soft acidity and enticing aroma, has long been cherished by Europeans and ranked among the world's premium coffee varieties. Europeans have given Tanzanian coffee the nickname "coffee gentleman," while Chinese coffee connoisseurs consider it, along with the "king of coffee" Blue Mountain and the "coffee lady" Mocha, to form the "Three Musketeers of Coffee."
Geographical Features
Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania reaches an impressive height of 5,895 meters and is connected to Mt. Meru, serving as the main production area for Kilimanjaro coffee. As Africa's highest peak and the only snow-capped mountain on the equator, Mt. Kilimanjaro is known as the "roof of Africa" and the "snow white princess on the equator." The fertile volcanic ash has endowed the coffee here with rich body and soft acidity, possessing typical characteristics of African coffee beans. Kilimanjaro AA represents the highest grade of coffee beans, with superior quality in all aspects. When medium to dark roasted, it develops a rich aroma, making it suitable for single-origin brewing or iced coffee.
Coffee Processing Traditions
Tanzanians continue to maintain many coffee traditions, often collecting overripe fallen fruits from under coffee trees, which somewhat compromises the quality of the coffee. They consistently use the natural (dry) processing method for coffee beans and rarely employ the washed method, allowing the beans to absorb aromatic substances from the fruit pulp, resulting in prominent fruity notes.
Distinctive Characteristics
Kilimanjaro coffee possesses distinctive characteristics, emitting delicate fragrance and containing aromas of wine and fruit that leave an endless aftertaste. In appearance, it closely resembles Kenyan coffee, but in overall flavor profile, it's closer to Sumatran Kerinci coffee. After tasting Kilimanjaro coffee, one often perceives a soft, mellow earthy flavor lingering on the palate. Coffee gourmets often describe it with terms like "wild" or "savage," making authentic Kilimanjaro coffee "the coffee with the most African characteristics."
Geographical Knowledge
Tanzania is located in eastern Africa, south of the equator. It borders Kenya and Uganda to the north, Zambia, Malawi, and Mozambique to the south, Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of Congo to the west, and faces the Indian Ocean to the east.
