Production Regions
The total area for Arabica and Robusta coffee cultivation is estimated at 265,000 hectares. Tanzania's coffee production is concentrated in the northern, western, and southern regions of the country.
Growing Altitude
Robusta: 800-900 meters
Arabica: 1,000-2,500 meters
Climate
The eastern coastal regions and some inland lowlands of Tanzania have a tropical savanna climate, while the western inland plateau features a tropical highland climate. Most areas have an average temperature of 21-25°C. The more than 20 islands of Zanzibar have a tropical marine climate, characterized by year-round heat and humidity with an average annual temperature of 26°C.
Rainfall
Rainfall patterns are divided into bimodal and unimodal distributions. Regions with bimodal rainfall distribution include provinces around the Lake Victoria basin, the northeastern highlands, and the coastal and inland northeastern areas. Bimodal rainfall regions are characterized by two rainy seasons: a short rainy season from September to December with total rainfall reaching 200-500mm, and a long rainy season from March to May with rainfall reaching 300-600mm. Areas outside the bimodal rainfall regions have unimodal rainfall distribution, with rainfall occurring from November to April and reaching 500-1000mm. The northern region has fertile volcanic soil.
Regional Coffee Characteristics
Northern Region:
Green beans are grayish-green, large, dense, and aesthetically pleasing. They exhibit medium acidity, good body, and offer pleasant aroma and sweetness when tasted.
Southern Region:
Njombe, Ruvuma, and Iringa regions: Green beans are deep green with thin silver skin. They feature light to medium acidity and body, with good fruit flavors and strong floral aromas.
Mbeya, Songwe, and Katavi: Green beans are deep green with yellow silver skin. They have light to medium acidity and body, with good fruit flavors and intense floral aromas.
Western Region:
Green beans are relatively round and dense. They offer medium acidity and body with pleasant aromas.
Geographic Knowledge
Tanzania is located in eastern Africa, south of the equator. It borders Kenya and Uganda to the north, Zambia, Malawi, and Mozambique to the south, Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of Congo to the west, and the Indian Ocean to the east.
