FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Yunnan Small-Bean Coffee
The Zhukula coffee forest belongs to Arabica beans, specifically the Yunnan small-bean Bourbon and Typica varieties. Currently, the area planted with Arabica coffee in Yunnan has exceeded 300,000 mu. Small-bean coffee is suitable for growing on mountainous terrain at altitudes between 800-1800 meters. If the altitude is too high, the taste becomes sour; if too low, it becomes bitter. Most small-bean coffee is planted in dry, hot valley areas around 1100 meters altitude, resulting in moderate acidity and rich, mellow aroma.
Many regions in Yunnan possess unique environments suitable for growing small-bean coffee, producing excellent quality small-bean coffee. The main planting areas are distributed in cities and prefectures such as Lincang, Baoshan, Pu'er, Xishuangbanna, and Dehong. Among them, the particularly outstanding one is "Simao Coffee." In January 2006, the Specialty Coffee Association of America published comparison results: after three consecutive years of comparing Simao coffee with Colombian coffee and comprehensive scoring, Simao coffee scored 88.75%, while Colombian coffee scored 85.88%. In 2009, the planting area of Arabica "Simao Coffee" in Pu'er City reached 218,000 mu, producing 17,400 tons of coffee beans. The exceptional quality of "Simao Coffee" has attracted international coffee giants such as "Nestlé," "Maxwell House," and "Starbucks." A CEO from Starbucks once made a surprising statement after inspecting the "Simao Coffee" plantation area: "If an ordinary cup of coffee sells for three dollars in the market, then a cup of 'Simao Coffee' has the potential to sell for at least seven dollars."
The Tropic of Cancer passes through Pu'er City, sharing the same latitude zone with world-famous coffee-growing regions like Jamaica and Colombia. It belongs to the golden zone for coffee cultivation, with excellent natural conditions such as climate, soil, and altitude. It has been called a "paradise" for Arabica coffee by many top world coffee experts.
