FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to La Esmeralda Geisha

Until Daniel Peterson, the owner of Panama La Esmeralda, accidentally discovered that the coffee beans produced by these Geisha coffee trees, originally used as windbreaks at the highest point of his coffee plantation, had the characteristic citrus and floral aromas of African beans. After separating these coffee beans and entering them in the 2004 Panama Coffee Cupping Competition, they became an overnight success. Since then, Geisha beans have been unstoppable, winning the Panama Coffee Cupping Competition for many consecutive years. In the eyes of today's specialty coffee enthusiasts worldwide, Geisha coffee beans are undoubtedly the supreme treasure.

However, Geisha has been circulating for decades, making it difficult to determine whether the current Geisha is the same as those seeds introduced back then, and whether it has experienced hybridization has long been unknown.

La Esmeralda rose to fame with the Geisha variety. The Geisha variety was discovered in the Geisha forest of Ethiopia in 1931 and later sent to the Coffee Research Institute in Kenya. It was then introduced to Uganda, Tanzania, and Costa Rica, where it performed mediocrely. It wasn't until it was transplanted to Panama in the 1960s that it made a stunning debut after nearly half a century. In 2005, 2006, and 2007, it defeated varieties like Bourbon, Caturra, Catuai, and Typica at BOP (Best of Panama), winning three consecutive championships.

In 2007, at the International Famous Beans Cupping Competition hosted by the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA), Geisha won again, with a bidding price of $130 per pound, setting the highest price record for competition beans in history. Geisha belongs to the Typica family. After leaving Ethiopia, it grew into the king of coffee in the land of Panama. It conquered taste buds with its rich floral and fruit aromas, and its transparent, bright acidity.

Tasting Geisha reveals a pleasant sweetness upon entry, accompanied by subtle floral notes, a comfortable and balanced mouthfeel, and a long-lasting aftertaste. The unique full fruit aromas of lychee, lemon, and citrus are already stunning enough. With careful attention, you can also detect honey peach and apricot aromas, creating an overall feeling that is cool and transparent. Every time we brew it, we approach it with the reverence of making a sacred brew, not daring to be the slightest bit careless.

Knowledge Point

Panama has one of the highest volcanoes in Central America: Baru Volcano. Baru Volcano has an altitude of over 3,474 meters, and the surrounding land is rich and balanced in nutrients, providing excellent conditions for the sowing and cultivation of Panamanian coffee.
