FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Panamanian Coffee
Panama is a small country located in the center of the American continent with a total area of 75,517 square kilometers. It borders Colombia to the east, the Pacific Ocean to the south, Costa Rica to the west, and the Caribbean Sea to the north. The country's territory is shaped like an "S," connecting North and South America. Panama's terrain is varied with numerous valleys and rivers. Apart from the coastal plains in the north and south, most of the country consists of mountainous regions.
Panama is situated near the equator and has a tropical marine climate, with humid days and cool nights. The average annual temperature ranges from 23 to 27°C. The year is divided into dry and rainy seasons, with an average annual precipitation of 1,500 to 2,500 millimeters.
High-quality Panamanian coffee is grown in the western part of the country, near Costa Rica and close to the Pacific Ocean. The most famous coffee comes from the Boquet district in Chiriqui province, with Volcán, Santa Clara, and Candela also being well-known. Other regions include the David district, Remacimeinto district, Bugaba district, and Tole district. Only coffee grown at altitudes between 1,300 and 1,500 meters is considered special coffee.
The Boquet region of Panama is located in Chiriqui province, bordering Costa Rica, and is the famous origin of Panamanian Geisha coffee, renowned worldwide for producing high-quality Arabica coffee.
Panamanian coffee production has been declining in recent years. However, Panamanian coffee's mild flavor, high sweetness, and nutty notes have continued to attract coffee enthusiasts, especially since the discovery of the Geisha variety. Since the early 2000s, "Panama" and "Geisha" have become almost synonymous. The Geisha variety was discovered at the famous Hacienda La Esmeralda farm in Boquete, Panama (owned by the Peterson family). In 2004, the Petersons separately harvested the Geisha from their farm and entered it in the annual "Best of Panama" coffee competition, where they won first place.
Geisha quickly attracted the attention of the entire specialty coffee community. Esmeralda's Geisha green beans fetched prices exceeding $140 per pound at auction. The success of Geisha at auction prompted farms that previously only grew Caturra and Bourbon to start planting Geisha. Even other coffee-producing countries began planting Geisha, such as Colombia, Guatemala, Costa Rica, and others.
Knowledge Point: Panama has one of the highest volcanoes in Central America: Volcán Barú. With an altitude exceeding 3,474 meters, the surrounding land is rich and balanced in nutrients, providing excellent conditions for the cultivation and growth of Panamanian coffee.
