FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee

Jamaica Blue Mountain is a classic example of the Typica variety.

Currently, there are over a thousand discovered or artificially bred Arabica coffee varieties worldwide. Typica is one of the most famous among them. Many world-renowned coffees are Typica varieties, including Blue Mountain, Hawaiian Kona, Papua New Guinea, Turtle Island Coffee, and more.

Typica is the oldest variety originating from Ethiopia. Besides the native Typica in Ethiopia, Typica beans from other regions are relatively larger in shape, with a pointed oval form, flat bean surface, and centered symmetrical midline. Washed green beans have distinct aromas of fresh fruit or grass. After roasting, the flavor is elegant and balanced. However, it has weak disease resistance, low yield, and is susceptible to pests, making it expensive.

Jamaica is the only country in the world with a government coffee management agency—the Coffee Industry Board (CIB), which operates under the Jamaican Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. The CIB's functions include cultivation technical guidance, processing training, fair trade, quality supervision, and other matters related to the quality and brand of Jamaica Blue Mountain. The CIB's board members are all estate owners who own a certain scale of coffee plantations in Jamaica (due to industry shifts, newly certified Jamaica Blue Mountain estates now require an area of over 50 hectares).

The CIB stipulates that only coffee beans produced in Jamaica Blue Mountain growing regions above 2,200 feet can be called Jamaica Blue Mountain. Its grades are classified by bean size into NO.1, NO.2, NO.3, and manually selected PB. Among these, the basic standards for NO.1 Blue Mountain green beans include beans above 17 screen size, defect rate below 3%, moisture content around 13%, etc. Additionally, to date, Blue Mountain coffee beans have only been processed using the washed method—no sun-drying or other processing methods exist.

Currently, the market price for Blue Mountain green beans is around 800 yuan per kilogram. Each kilogram can yield approximately 830 grams of roasted beans. Adding the profit margin of roasters, it should be normal for roasted beans to cost over 1,300 yuan per kilogram. Below this price, it's nearly impossible.

Knowledge Point

The Jamaican government established the Jamaica Coffee Industry Board in 1950. This board sets quality standards for Jamaican coffee and supervises the implementation of these standards to ensure the quality of Jamaican coffee.
