FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Sumatra Typica Varieties

Just like wine, coffee comes in many varieties. However, only two varieties truly possess commercial value and are widely cultivated, with the coffee beans they produce ranking superior to those from other coffee trees.

Biologically, coffee varieties can be divided into Arabica, Robusta, and Liberica. The world primarily consumes Arabica and Robusta varieties. Generally, Arabica is used for single-origin or specialty coffee, while Robusta is used for instant coffee. From both coffee culture and genetic perspectives, Bourbon and Typica are the two most important branches of Arabica coffee.

Mandheling, also known as "Sumatra Coffee," is mostly produced in North Sumatra as Gayo, primarily of the Ateng variety. The Lake Tawar region in the northern part can be called Aceh Coffee or Lake Tawar Coffee, while the Lintong and Lake Toba areas in South Sumatra can be referred to as Mandheling. The Lintong area is the authentic Mandheling-producing region. The finest Mandheling varieties include four types: Sidikalang, Bergendar, Siborong Borong, and Telok Sanggul.

Lake Toba, located in central North Sumatra Province, where Dutch colonists moved "Java Mandheling" northward to the Lake Toba region in 1888, establishing the modern Mandheling legend.

Lake Tawar, situated in the central Aceh Special Administrative Region, lies at the northern tip of Sumatra Island with an area less than one-tenth of Lake Toba. However, in recent years, both coffee quality and production from this region have surpassed those of Lake Toba.

Mandheling has a rich, heavy flavor with intense body and vibrant, lively characteristics. It's neither astringent nor acidic, allowing its body and bitterness to be fully expressed. The appearance of Mandheling coffee beans can be considered the most unattractive, but coffee enthusiasts say that the less appealing Sumatra coffee beans look, the better, richer, and smoother their taste becomes.

Knowledge Point

Robusta is cultivated at altitudes below 800 meters. Robusta demonstrates extremely strong adaptability and possesses robust resistance to pests and diseases.
