FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Yunnan Coffee Varieties
As China's largest coffee-producing region today, Yunnan has attracted major coffee companies like Starbucks and Nestlé, who have recognized its enormous potential.
Coffee lovers have likely heard of Yunnan coffee to some extent. This time, we'll introduce you to the varieties, history, growing regions, and stories behind Yunnan coffee.
Yunnan Coffee Varieties
Yunnan's coffee varieties are mainly cultivated with two classic, high-quality coffee varieties: Typica and Bourbon.
In 1991, the Catimor series was introduced from Kenya (featuring stronger virus resistance and higher yields), which is a variant of the Arabica species (also known as small-grain variety). Due to the similar morphology and habits of these two varieties, they are often cultivated together.
The scientific name for small-grain coffee plants is Arabica, which is a category of coffee with over 100 varieties.
Among these, Typica and Bourbon are recognized worldwide as the best varieties within the Arabica species. What local people in Baoshan refer to as "old varieties" are actually Typica and Bourbon.
All coffee planted in the Pu'er region of Yunnan is of the Catimor variety. Baoshan City introduced Typica and Bourbon varieties as early as the 1950s, which locals call "old varieties." Because these old varieties have lower pest and disease resistance and yields, require more labor-intensive management, and offer no significant price advantage in the market, coffee farmers have switched to planting the new Catimor variety in recent years.
From a botanical perspective, Yunnan small-grain coffee shares genetic similarities with the world-renowned Jamaica Blue Mountain and Hawaii Kona coffees.
Knowledge Point: Arabica coffee is generally believed to originate from the Ethiopian highlands and is widely distributed in tropical regions. Through repeated mutations and breeding, it has given rise to numerous varieties.
