FrontStreet Coffee - Catuai Variety Introduction
Catuai:
The name Catuai comes from an indigenous language, meaning "very good." Catuai is a dwarf coffee tree developed in Brazil in 1950, a hybrid between Yellow Caturra and Mundo Novo.
After its official release in the 1970s, it was introduced to Central American countries and widely cultivated in Guatemala, Honduras, Panama, as well as its country of origin, Brazil.
Catuai has strong resistance to natural disasters, particularly wind and rain. It inherits the advantage of Caturra's short stature, addressing the shortcomings of Mundo Novo. Another advantage is its firm fruit set, which doesn't easily fall off in strong winds, compensating for Arabica's fragile nature. However, its overall flavor profile is less complex than Caturra and lacks the richness and body of Mundo Novo, which is its greatest drawback. Additionally, its fruit production lifespan is only about ten years, making its short longevity another weakness. It is favored in regions with frequent wind and rain, but requires adequate fertilization and care.
Catuai was introduced to Honduras in 1979 and commercially released in 1989, becoming widely popular among farmers. Today, it accounts for more than half of all coffee production in Honduras! Due to its short stature, Catuai can be planted densely, and it develops excellent flavors at altitudes exceeding 1,300 meters. The only drawback is its susceptibility to pests and diseases.
Catuai can adapt well to various altitudes. When grown above 800m and considering flavor alone, under appropriate terroir conditions and processing methods, Catuai can produce quite wonderful flavors.
Catuai is widely cultivated in many coffee-producing regions throughout Central and South America, including Brazil. Catuai also comes in red and yellow fruit varieties, with the red fruit variety winning awards more frequently than the yellow one. Catuai, Caturra, Mundo Novo, and Bourbon are considered the four major coffee varieties in Brazil. This time, our editor brings you coffee beans of the Catuai variety from the Elida estate in Panama.
