Catuai:

The name Catuai comes from an indigenous language and means "very good." Catuai is a dwarf coffee tree developed in Brazil in 1950, a hybrid between Yellow Caturra and Mundo Novo.

After its official release in the 1970s, it was introduced to the countries of Central America and is now widely cultivated in Guatemala, Honduras, and Panama, as well as in its country of origin, Brazil.

Catuai has strong resistance to natural disasters, particularly wind and rain. It inherits Caturra's short stature, which corrects the main shortcoming of Mundo Novo. Another advantage is its firm fruit set: the cherries do not easily drop in strong winds, compensating for the fragile nature of typical Arabica. However, its overall flavor profile is less complex than Caturra's and lacks the richness and body of Mundo Novo — its greatest drawback. Its productive lifespan is also only about ten years, so short longevity is another weakness. It is favored in regions with frequent wind and rain, but it demands adequate fertilization and care in return.

Catuai was introduced to Honduras in 1979 and commercially released in 1989, quickly becoming popular among farmers. Today it accounts for more than half of all coffee production in Honduras! Because the plants are short, Catuai can be planted densely, and at altitudes above 1,300 meters it develops excellent flavors. Its only real liability is susceptibility to pests and diseases.

Catuai adapts well to a wide range of altitudes. When grown above 800m and judged purely on flavor, under the right terroir conditions and processing methods it can produce quite wonderful results.

Catuai is widely planted across many coffee-producing regions of Central and South America, including Brazil. It comes in red-fruit and yellow-fruit forms, with the red variety winning awards more frequently than the yellow. Alongside Caturra, Mundo Novo, and Bourbon, Catuai is considered one of the four great coffee varieties of Brazil.
