FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Nicaragua Jaime Molina Estate Honey Process Red Bourbon
Compared to Guatemalan coffee, Nicaraguan coffee may be considered relatively unknown. In contrast to Guatemala's high-altitude beans, Nicaraguan beans are more balanced but slightly lack distinctive characteristics. They are medium-sized in granularity, with a mild flavor that is wonderfully aromatic and rich. Nicaragua is located in central Central America, with the finest coffee produced in the Matagalpa regions of Jinotega and Nueva Segovia.
Nicaragua Growing Regions
Nicaragua is primarily divided into four major regions: Segovias, Matagalpa/Jinotega, Boaco, and the Pacific Coast. The Segovias region has the highest cultivation altitude at around 1,500-2,000 meters, producing the highest grade SHG (Strictly High Grown) coffee.
Nicaragua Coffee Cultivation
Widespread volcanic ash and shade-growing methods produce high-quality Nicaraguan coffee with mild, smooth flavors and subtle acidity. Nicaraguan coffee beans are among the largest of all coffee varieties. MADRIZ is located in the mountainous northern region of Nicaragua, bordering Nueva Segovia, Jinotega, and Esteli. This area is peaceful and elegant, featuring the famous Somoto Canyon. The local population consists mainly of various indigenous tribal groups and people of mixed Spanish colonial heritage (predominantly Chorotegas). The region produces coffee, develops artistic and handicraft processing trades, and maintains traditional delicious cuisine. Madriz is characterized by a cool climate, with seemingly simple small towns featuring distinctive white buildings with beautiful roofs and special tiles. The area also has numerous coffee plantations, with mountains covered in lush pine and oak forests.
Madriz high-altitude beans are ecological coffee with extremely hard shells, cultivated in purely natural growing environments using complex methods to maintain the coffee's delicate aroma and taste. They are produced between Matagalpa and Jinotega in northern Nicaragua, where annual rainfall averages 1500-1700mm and temperatures range between 20-29 degrees Celsius, resulting in high-quality mountain-grown beans. All coffee is hand-selected, with labor and time costs far exceeding those of ordinary beans.
