FrontStreet Coffee - Nicaragua Finca Limoncillo Java Washed Introduction

An Endangered Legendary Variety - Java Species

The Java species appeared in Nicaragua after a long journey, once endangered and finally successfully cultivated again in Nicaragua. It originates from the Java Long Berry variety, which, as the name suggests, comes from the island of Java in Indonesia. The Java species resembles Typica in appearance. Generally, Java beans seen are mostly short-grained, with long-grained Java being less common. Nicaragua's Java belongs to the rare long Java grain variety. Both its quality and appearance are rare, yet its flavor is remarkably clean and delicate. Such flavors had never appeared in Nicaragua's coffee history. In 2008, the Java species won second place in Nicaragua's national Cup of Excellence competition. Nicaraguan Java satisfied multiple demands: limited quantity, excellent flavor, and a compelling story.

Finca Limoncillo

Finca Limoncillo has a beautiful name and is indeed a very beautiful farm. The estate contains 9 natural waterfalls and many small streams, with highly diverse flora and fauna. The estate covers a vast area of 171 hectares, with elevations ranging from 850 to 1,150 meters, extending up very steep mountain slopes. The farm was established very early, opening in 1932. The origin of its name, it is said, comes from the lemon trees that originally grew throughout the estate.

Mierisch Family

Finca Limoncillo is currently operated by the Mierisch family. The former owner, Dr. Erwin Mierisch, was a gynecologist in the United States, but running coffee farms in Nicaragua seemed to be his greater interest. The Mierisch family had already made a name for themselves in coffee cultivation and research experiments. In 2008, they won second place in the COE competition with Java Nica (the Java successfully reintroduced in Nicaragua), specially cultivated at Finca Limoncillo.
