The Global Coffee Belt

The global "Coffee Belt" is primarily located in the areas with abundant rainfall between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn.

Most coffee-producing regions worldwide sit in the tropics between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn, which we call the "Coffee Belt" or "Coffee Zone." As a tropical cash crop, the coffee tree thrives where the climate is exceptional: sunlight shines year-round, heat is abundant, rainfall is sufficient, and the average annual temperature stays above 20°C.

However, not every variety of coffee tree tolerates high temperatures, high humidity, and strong sunlight. Some Arabica trees, for instance, cannot withstand heat and humidity and are usually planted at higher altitudes; if the sun is too intense, they need shade—hence "rainforest coffee" and "shade-grown coffee."

The Coffee Belt extends from 25 degrees north latitude to 30 degrees south latitude, covering many countries in Central and West Africa, Central and Southeast Asia, the Pacific, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Cultivation is concentrated in this belt because of temperature limits: coffee trees are very susceptible to frost, so areas further north or south are unsuitable. Only the tropics offer ideal heat and humidity.

Three Major Coffee Growing Regions

The global "Coffee Belt" is divided into three major production regions: the American region, represented by Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Colombia, and Brazil; the African region, represented by Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, and Côte d'Ivoire; and the Asian region, represented by Indonesia, India, and Yunnan in China.

The African Coffee Region

A brief note on the African region. What we call the African coffee region actually consists of only a few countries and areas where coffee is cultivated, owing to the uniqueness of Africa's geography: the world's largest desert, the Sahara, lies to the north, while the ancient plateau continent lies to the south, making suitable coffee climates hard to find. Only countries and regions near the equator grow coffee trees well, and the beans they produce are of very high quality.
