FrontStreet Coffee - An Introduction to Coffee Growing Regions

The Global Coffee Belt

The global "Coffee Belt" is primarily located in the areas with abundant rainfall between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn.

Most coffee-producing regions worldwide are situated in the tropical areas between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn, which we refer to as the "Coffee Belt" or "Coffee Zone" in English. As a tropical cash crop, coffee trees grow in the Coffee Belt where climate conditions are exceptional. There, direct sunlight shines year-round, with abundant heat and sufficient rainfall, and the average annual temperature is above 20°C.

However, not all varieties of coffee trees can tolerate high temperatures, high humidity, and strong sunlight. For instance, some Arabica coffee trees cannot withstand high temperatures and humidity, and are often planted in higher altitude areas. If sunlight is too strong, shade treatment is required, giving rise to "rainforest coffee" and "shade-grown coffee."

The Coffee Belt (coffee production zone) extends from 25 degrees north latitude to 30 degrees south latitude, covering many countries in Central and West Africa, Central and Southeast Asia, the Pacific, Latin America, and the Caribbean. The reason why coffee cultivation is concentrated in this belt-shaped region is due to temperature limitations. Coffee trees are very susceptible to frost damage, making areas further north or south unsuitable. Only tropical regions are appropriate, where the heat and humidity are most ideal.

Three Major Coffee Growing Regions

The global "Coffee Belt" is divided into three major production regions: The American region (represented by the "Ka" character): Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Colombia, Brazil, etc.; The African region (represented by the "Fei" character): Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Côte d'Ivoire, etc.; The Asian region (represented by the "Dai" character): Indonesia, India, Yunnan China, etc.

The African Coffee Region

Here's a brief explanation of the African coffee region. In fact, what we call the African coffee region actually consists of only a few countries and regions where coffee is cultivated. This is due to the uniqueness of Africa's geographical environment. The north has the world's largest Sahara Desert, while the south has the oldest plateau continent, making it difficult to create climate conditions suitable for coffee cultivation. Only the countries and regions near the equator are relatively suitable for growing coffee trees, and the coffee beans produced there are of very high quality.

Knowledge Point

Although called "beans," coffee beans are actually the seeds of the fruit of the Rubiaceae plant (coffee tree).
