Established in 1957, N.V. Pawani Medan (PWN) specializes in exporting Indonesian products including coffee, rubber, cinnamon, cloves, and patchouli oil. It was the first company to export coffee from North Sumatra and the first to make "Mandheling Coffee" famous in Japan. Since 1977, the company has focused on exporting premium Sumatran Arabica Mandheling Grade 1 and Robusta AP-I Grade 2 coffee beans, primarily to Japan, Taiwan, and the United States, with Japan and Taiwan accounting for over 95% of exports. In Japan and Taiwan, "PWN" has become synonymous with "quality assurance." Pawani Coffee Company holds the "Golden Mandheling" trademark, while Japanese companies had to register the "Gold Top Mandheling" trademark instead.

Sumatra Coffee Categories

Sumatra is the main production area for Indonesian specialty coffee, with a relatively complex coffee system that can be summarized into four main types:

(1) Mandheling: Refers to semi-sun-dried or sun-dried beans from the Lindong mountainous area at elevations of 900-1200 meters around Lake Toba in central-northern Sumatra;

(2) Golden Mandheling: Undergoes four rounds of manual screening, making it higher grade than regular Mandheling with larger beans;

(3) Tawar Hu Coffee: Refers to washed, semi-washed,or sun-dried beans (less common) from the Gayo mountain area at elevations of 800-1600 meters near Tawar Hu in the Aceh region at the northernmost tip of Sumatra. This area features semi-washed techniques taught by the renowned Costa Rican La Minita estate and is known for Dutch coffee groups specializing in Gayo mountain washed beans;

(4) Aged Mandheling and Java Old Brown.

When coffee first entered the mainland market, Mandheling was among the earliest single-origin black coffees available in the industry. Initially, Mandheling left a strong impression with its rich, bitter, and roasted flavors, as the roasting degree was relatively deeper back then. With the development of the coffee market, more people began studying coffee, gaining access to better coffee varieties, and preferences shifted toward lighter roasts, leading to decreased affection for Mandheling.

However, with the passage of time, or rather through adjustments in roasting methods and degrees by skilled roasters, Mandheling can change people's deeply rooted impressions. Mandheling can also have refreshing fruit acidity, and its bitterness is no longer burnt but leans toward the sweet bitterness of dark chocolate, with a delightful creamy mouthfeel.

Knowledge Point

Mandheling is neither an Indonesian place name, production area name, port name, nor coffee variety name, but rather a phonetic error of the Mandailing people who originally inhabited Sumatra.
