FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Blue Mountain Coffee
Blue Mountain Coffee originates from Jamaica, named after the Blue Mountains surrounded by the Caribbean Sea. It features excellent balance of acidity, sweetness, and bitterness, with superb flavor and aroma, making it ideal for single-origin coffee and suitable for medium roasting. Blue Mountain Coffee is among the world's finest coffees, with Jamaica's climate, geological structure, and terrain providing ideal growing conditions. It's worth noting that 99.9% of Blue Mountain Coffee available in China today is merely grown near the Blue Mountain region. Only coffee produced from the 6,000 hectares of land above 1,600 meters in elevation can be called Blue Mountain.
Jamaican coffee can generally be divided into two categories: coffee grown and produced in the Blue Mountain region of eastern Jamaica, and coffee grown and produced outside the Blue Mountain region. The former accounts for about 25% of production and is authentic Blue Mountain Coffee, while the latter accounts for about 75% and can only be called names such as Jamaican Washed Coffee Beans.
The Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee growing region is strictly limited to elevations between 910-1,700m in Jamaica's Blue Mountain area. Strictly speaking, coffee grown at 910-1,700m is called Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee; coffee grown at 460-910m is called Blue Mountain Style Coffee or Jamaican High Mountain Coffee; coffee grown below 460m is called Jamaican Prime Coffee; above 1,700m is a forest protection zone with no coffee cultivation.
Jamaica is a very small coffee-producing country, with its coffee production accounting for only 0.02% of the world market share, and 85% is exported to Japan. Among these, the Coffee Industry Board (CIB), established in 1948, plays a leading role in promoting the development of Jamaica's coffee industry, increasing coffee farmers' income, protecting Jamaican coffee quality, and selling Jamaican coffee globally. Blue Mountain Coffee quality can be divided into premium and regular grades, with premium grades sold in wooden barrels and other grades sold in burlap bags.
Undoubtedly, the special climate and soil environment of high mountain areas directly affect coffee quality, creating Blue Mountain Coffee's unparalleled flavor and balance. Bright and delicate fruit acidity complements exquisite, even nutty sweetness. If you feel the body is slightly lacking, please take a moderate sip and close your eyes to savor the aftertaste. You'll find the sweet aftertaste lingering on your tongue like nectar, with a lasting finish.
Knowledge Point: The Jamaica Coffee Industry Board samples coffee beans from every batch, roasts and grinds them, then brews three cups of coffee. Senior tasters taste them according to established procedures. Only when two or more cups meet the standards can the coffee be certified as Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee.
