FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Guji Coffee Growing Region in Sidamo
A Rising Star: Ethiopia's Guji Growing Region
Guji is located in the border area of the Sidamo region. In the past, it was just one of the micro-growing regions within Sidamo province.
With its superior geographical location and cupping quality, Guji has been independently separated into a new growing region within Ethiopia's unique ECX trading system! In 2010, Guji officially became an independent growing region.
Most buyers still consider it part of Sidamo province, so it's often referred to as Sidamo Guji.
The rise of Guji can be attributed to natural conditions. Surrounded by mountains covered with native coffee trees, after countless generations of natural evolution, the coffee trees vary in form but are all lush and vibrant. Guji region has many primeval forests and large areas of undeveloped land. Even in newly developed agricultural land within estates, considerable original forests have been preserved, achieving natural balance with the environment - truly a paradise!
The Guji growing region has high altitudes, reaching 2,250 to 2,350 meters, and on some mountain roads, altitudes reach nearly 3,000 meters! Such unique geographical locations and ideal microclimate environments allow Guji to cultivate coffee flavors different from other regions, producing exceptional coffee.
Guji's Two Major Advantages
First is the single processing station/estate system. Unquestionably, Ethiopia's rare single estate system can be found in Guji, and there are increasingly more batches available for custom processing! The second is the high-altitude climate advantage. The Guji growing region starts at altitudes of at least 2,000 meters, with excellent quality. The higher the altitude, the harder and denser the coffee beans, and they can express unique flavors.
Furthermore, local small farmers have been cultivating organic coffee beans since 2001, cooperating with medium-sized producers and foreign companies on technical expertise. The combination of favorable timing, geographical advantages, and human cooperation has made this region shine. Guji not only has high altitudes but also offers excellent value for money, making it one of the emerging growing regions not to be missed.
