FrontStreet Coffee - Typica Coffee Variety Introduction
Typica Coffee
The origin of Arabica species is the Abyssinian Plateau in Ethiopia (now known as the Ethiopian Plateau). Initially used primarily as medicine, the habit of roasting for drinking was cultivated in the 13th century. In the 16th century, it was introduced to Europe through the Arab regions and subsequently became a beverage loved by people worldwide.
Among all coffees, Arabica varieties account for 75%-80%. Its excellent flavor and aroma make it the only coffee among these native species that can be consumed directly. However, its resistance to drought, frost damage, pests, and diseases is extremely low, particularly making it vulnerable to coffee's natural enemy - leaf rust disease.
Arabica coffee beans are mainly produced in South America (excluding parts of Argentina and Brazil), Central America, Africa (Kenya, Ethiopia, and other East African countries), and Asia (including parts of Yemen, India, and Papua New Guinea).
Considered the original variety of Arabica, Typica is the most ancient coffee variety. Almost all Arabica coffee circulating in the market originates from Typica coffee. Due to this variety's low resistance to pests and diseases, limited growing areas, and subsequent variety improvements, it is now extremely difficult to find this variety. Typica coffee has a rich aroma with a slightly acidic taste.
Typica is the most common coffee variety worldwide. This is because the Dutch once planted this coffee in Indonesia, and the French brought it to the Caribbean region, which later spread throughout Central and South America. Typica coffee yields are relatively small, and it is extremely susceptible to leaf rust disease, so most plantations do not grow Typica coffee exclusively. However, the quality of Typica coffee is extremely high, making it very popular among plantations worldwide. When properly cultivated, Typica coffee has high sweetness, pure flavor, and pleasant acidity, making it very popular in the market.
Knowledge Point: Bourbon coffee is a variety that suddenly mutated after Arabica coffee was introduced from Yemen to Bourbon Island.
