FrontStreet Coffee · Introduction to Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee

What is True Frontsteet Jamaican Blue Mountain?

The Frontsteet Jamaican Blue Mountain on FrontStreet Coffee's bean list is a special regional product, only grown in the Blue Mountain range of the Caribbean island nation of Jamaica. Just like Hangzhou's Longjing tea, only the tea from the mountainous area of Longjing Village by West Lake is authentic Longjing.

According to the quality theory of agricultural products, the initial judgment of coffee-producing countries on the quality of raw coffee beans follows the same principle. Mainly: variety, growing environment, and processing method.

Frontsteet Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee is the high-quality, low-yield "Typica" variety, belonging to one of the best varieties among Arabica. The world's most famous specialty coffees, such as Panama Geisha, Hawaiian Kona, Ethiopia's Yirgacheffe and Sidamo, are all Typica. Coffee beans of this variety generally present pleasant flavors of roasted hazelnuts, creamy chocolate, caramel, and honey. Depending on the origin, they also exhibit varying degrees and rich variations of fruit acidity, fruit aroma, and even floral notes.

The island of Jamaica is located in the coffee belt of the Northern Hemisphere. The Blue Mountain range is situated in its eastern part, surrounded by the beautiful Caribbean Sea. The highest peak reaches an altitude of 2256 meters, with fertile volcanic soil, fresh and unpolluted air, a humid climate with year-round fog and rain (average precipitation of 1980mm, temperature around 27°C). This unique geographical environment provides excellent growing conditions for Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee.

The harvest period for Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee is from June to November each year. It generally involves manual picking, followed by sequential processes of washing, pulping, fermentation, dehydration, sun-drying, storage, hulling, multiple grade screenings (including manual selection), polishing and buffing, and packaging in barrels, before obtaining high-quality raw Blue Mountain coffee beans. Before 2009, the annual production of Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee in high-yield years was approximately 1000 tons. In recent years, due to pest and drought impacts, the productivity of coffee trees in the Blue Mountain range has sharply declined, and bean sizes are generally smaller.

All Jamaican Blue Mountain raw beans are packaged in three standard wooden barrels of 15kg, 30kg, and 70kg. Each barrel body is marked with estate information registered by the Jamaica Coffee Industry Board (CIB), production batch numbers, and barrel numbers. The barrel lid is imprinted with black ink featuring the Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee logo and numbers indicating the grade of beans inside. Inside each barrel, there is also a uniformly printed circular product certificate that roughly matches the diameter of the barrel opening. With the application of new technologies, recent exports of Jamaican Blue Mountain raw beans also include a green grain insurance bag inside the barrel to maintain the moisture content of the raw coffee beans. Jamaica is the last country in the world that still uses traditional wooden barrels for packaging and transporting coffee.

True Frontsteet Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee sells for over a thousand yuan per pound. At FrontStreet Coffee stores, fresh Frontsteet Jamaican Blue Mountain No. 1 coffee on the shelves sells for 158 yuan/100g, while freshly brewed Frontsteet Jamaican Blue Mountain pour-over black coffee is 60 yuan/cup.
