How Many African Countries Produce Coffee Beans and How Good Is Kenyan Coffee - A Must-Try for Coffee Connoisseurs
FrontStreet Coffee - African Coffee Introduction
Ethiopia
Ethiopia is located in East Africa. The wild coffee varieties found in the forests of the Kaffa region alone number as many as 5,000. Ethiopia is widely believed to be the birthplace of coffee. Local residents noticed that after cattle and sheep ate plants bearing red fruit, the animals became excited, powerful and even somewhat manic. People began to try the fruit themselves and gradually found themselves feeling more energetic, so they started harvesting and deliberately cultivating the plants. Because the fruit came from Kaffa, they gradually named it Coffee.
Kenya
Kenya's coffee-producing regions are concentrated mainly in the plateau areas around Mount Kenya. The tropical climate and acidic red volcanic soil provide natural, suitable growing conditions. Seven major producing regions are best known: Nyeri, Thika, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Embu and the western side of Mount Kenya. The main producing areas include Nyeri and Ruiru in the central region.
Higher-grade Kenyan coffee is aromatic and rich, with fruit flavors and a full, perfect mouthfeel. It has a distinctive fruit character with berry and grapefruit notes and a refreshing, clear texture. The flavor is bright.
Uganda
Around 500,000 coffee farms are involved in coffee agriculture here, accounting for 25% of the total population. The coffee trees are mostly vigorous Robusta varieties, making up about 94%, with only 6% traditional Arabica. Those rare Arabica beans grow in tropical rainforests and are mostly exported around the world. This makes Ugandan coffee unusually well suited to drinking as espresso, which sets it apart from the overall African style - rich, intense and strong.
Rwanda
Specialty-grade Rwandan coffee often has rich earthy notes with subtle hints of fruit, flowers and spice. Exquisite Rwandan coffee offers a smooth, silky body. The aroma can bring lemon and orange blossom scents with floral tones, complementing sweet citrus notes, and the aftertaste carries caramel. With good brewing technique it is easy to push the drinking experience further and bring out more juiciness.
Knowledge Point
Common Kenyan coffee does not have a heavy mouthfeel, but it does have refreshing acidity and unique fruit flavors. Some lots show slight spice notes and others carry red wine aromas. It is an excellent choice for anyone who dislikes bitterness.
FrontStreet Coffee Recommendation
To explore what East African coffee can do, start with Ethiopia, the birthplace of the species. FrontStreet Coffee's washed Yirgacheffe is the classic entry-level lot: clear jasmine florals and a bright citrus acidity, light and elegant, with a tea-like quality that tastes like a clean glass of lemon tea.
Much of Ethiopia's coffee follows a garden-farming model, where smallholders deliver their cherries to a village-level processing station and the coffee is sold under the team's name, which is why so many cooperatives exist. FrontStreet Coffee's Gutiti Cooperative is one example, from the Woka area on the southeastern edge of Yirgacheffe, and it shows the same clarity with citrus, lemon and elegant white florals.
For a different process from the same country, FrontStreet Coffee's Hambella lot from Guji in Sidamo uses traditional natural processing, with cherries dried on raised beds for 21 days and turned regularly, and defects removed by hand every three to five days. After a medium-light roast it gives a light fermented wine aroma with florals, citrus and mango, a honey sweetness, a cocoa note with a little spice, and a thick body with a long finish.
If you want to go further, FrontStreet Coffee's Hamasho 74158 comes from a Sidamo washing station known for quality, built mainly on the JARC 74-series disease-resistant varieties, with the small-beaned 74158 standing out for its floral and fruity aroma - think perfumed lemon, strawberry and star fruit.
