FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Costa Rica Tarrazú
Costa Rica is located in the Central American isthmus at 10°N latitude and 84°W longitude. It borders the Caribbean Sea to the east and the North Pacific Ocean to the west. Costa Rica is situated on the low-latitude volcanic belt of Central America, with the Central Plateau and mountainous regions at elevations of approximately 800-2000 meters, making it suitable for coffee cultivation. Costa Rican coffee has always been renowned for its extremely balanced, clean, and bright flavor profile, with fruity acidity reminiscent of berries. Exceptional Costa Rican coffee exhibits spicy notes and cocoa flavors in its aftertaste. The country's most famous growing region is Tarrazú, located near the capital city of San José. The Tarrazú region has the highest average latitude and excellent climate and soil conditions, making it the most famous and widely recognized premier coffee-producing region in Costa Rica. Tres Rios is a renowned sub-region within the Tarrazú growing area.
Tarrazú coffee beans are full-bodied with rich body, smooth mouthfeel, intense chocolate and nut aromas, moderate acidity, and an enticing fragrance. Costa Rica borders the Caribbean Sea to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west, just as its country name means in Spanish: "rich coast." Coffee cultivation is an extremely important industry in Costa Rican agriculture. The coffee beans produced in its high-altitude regions are world-renowned for their mild flavor, high acidity, aromatic qualities, and rich texture, making them widely popular. The raw beans are green, generally large in size, and all belong to the Arabica species. Costa Rican coffee offers a light, pure, and sweet flavor with pleasant aromas. Premium Costa Rican coffee is classified as Strictly Hard Bean (SHB).
Costa Rica stands as one of the most excellent coffee-producing countries in Central America. Blessed by nature with volcanic terrain, it receives the most natural organic fertilizers, thus producing coffee beans famous worldwide for their bright citrus and berry acidity. After roasting, these beans fully express rich fruity acidity while maintaining an extremely balanced, clean, and bright flavor profile. Among these, coffee beans that are meticulously cultivated through manual planting, careful nurturing, and strict selection can be considered candidates for specialty coffee roasting. Coffee beans processed through rigorous roasting methods can achieve the distinguished taste of specialty coffee, primarily featuring the slightly stimulating Tarrazú characteristic grassy flavor, with excellent thickness and complexity. The flavor profile offers a smooth mouthfeel and moderate acidity.
