FrontStreet Coffee - Colombian Huilan Region Introduction

Located in the southwest, the Huilan region sits at an altitude between 1,800 to 2,000 meters. The abundant rainfall brought by sea winds and the volcanic soil of the Andes Mountains make it an exceptionally high-quality planting area.

Coffee beans are mostly hand-picked by farmers when ripe and then transported to the San Augustine distribution center. Coffee cultivation and harvesting have become an important part of the simple lives of these farmers, whose coffee expertise is anything but simple.

In the past, the Huilan region has also produced champions of international competitions. This particular coffee exhibits strong sugarcane aroma and the sweet-tart characteristics of orange.

Colombia is located in the northwest of South America, bordering the Caribbean Sea to the north, Venezuela to the east, Brazil to the southeast, Ecuador to the south, and Panama to the northwest. All these surrounding countries are coffee-producing nations, as is Colombia.

Colombian coffee is world-renowned for its premium quality, smooth taste, and high grade.

All of this depends on Colombia's suitable climate, which provides a true "natural pasture" for coffee, and the fact that all cultivated coffee varieties are high-quality Arabica species.

Colombia's coffee trees are mainly cultivated in the Andes Mountains region. Colombia has three Cordillera mountain ranges running north-south, extending into the Andes. Coffee is planted along the highlands of these mountain ranges, where the mountain terraces provide diverse climates, allowing coffee to be harvested year-round.

Colombian Huilan

Huilan is located in the southwest of Colombia and is one of the main coffee cultivation areas. Because famous coffee cultivation sites are scattered throughout the Huilan region, the names of various small areas have become brand names and are circulated in the market. Coffee from the Huilan region, with its nutty, chocolate, and caramel aromas and appropriate acidity, is considered a premium specialty coffee.

As a national treasure of Colombian specialty coffee, Huilan absolutely captures the affection of countless coffee enthusiasts. Firstly, Colombian Huilan is a premium variety among Arabica coffee species, recognized for having the best balance. Huilan coffee is grown from Arabica bean varieties carefully selected by Colombians. Secondly, the uniquely favorable coffee cultivation environment creates extremely advantageous conditions for Huilan's growth. Named after its national region, Colombian Huilan grows on the canyon slopes of the Huilan region in South America, at altitudes between 1,400-1,800 meters, with abundant rainfall, fresh air, pleasant climate, and spring-like conditions year-round.

At the same time, after Huilan coffee matures, Colombians mostly adopt manual picking of coffee fruits (coffee cherries), carefully selecting only the most mature and full fruits. Most impressively, Colombian Huilan coffee beans mostly use washed processing methods. First, the skin and pulp of the coffee fruit are removed, then the beans are soaked in water tanks for fermentation, followed by washing with clean water and drying. Washed coffees typically have pure flavors, bright tastes, pleasant acidity, and reduce some of the defects found in dry-processed coffee.

Knowledge Point

The history of Colombian coffee dates back to 1808. A priest first brought coffee to Colombia from the French Antilles via Venezuela.
