FrontStreet Coffee - Arabica Variety Introduction
Arabica Species
The Arabica species originates from the Abyssinian Plateau in Ethiopia (now known as the Ethiopian Plateau). Initially used primarily as medicine, the habit of roasting for drinking was developed in the 13th century. In the 16th century, it was introduced to Europe through the Arab regions and subsequently became a beloved beverage for people worldwide.
Among all coffees, Arabica varieties account for 75%-80%. Its exceptional flavor and aroma make it the only coffee among these native species that can be consumed directly. However, it has extremely low resistance to drought, frost damage, and pests, particularly being vulnerable to coffee's natural enemy - leaf rust disease.
Arabica coffee beans are mainly produced in South America (excluding parts of Argentina and Brazil), Central America, Africa (Kenya, Ethiopia, and other East African countries), and Asia (including parts of Yemen, India, and Papua New Guinea).
Arabica's flavor profile is gentle and elegant, with lower caffeine content. Famous subspecies include Typica and Bourbon, making it economically most valuable and most beloved by coffee enthusiasts.
Typica
Typica is the earliest and most important variety among coffee species. This species has existed for centuries and has given rise to many other varieties. Notable typical varieties include Java, Maragogipe, and Timor hybrids.
This variety is widely grown in Central America, Jamaica, and Asia. Its characteristics include low yield, high quality, and susceptibility to rust and pests. Its flavor profile is often described as clean, sweet, and acidic.
Knowledge Point
The world's coffee-producing regions are mainly distributed in the areas north and south of the equator, also known as the "Coffee Belt."
