Different regional terroirs impart distinct characteristics to coffee beans. The three major specialty coffee producing regions—Asia, Africa, and the Americas—each yield coffee beans with unique flavor profiles, which is the charm of specialty coffee. Single-origin coffee is related to its producing region and can be divided into specialty and non-specialty categories. Single-origin coffee can also be classified into commercial and specialty grade levels.

African, American, or Asian Beans

Single-origin coffee beans have distinct personalities. Typically, specialty coffee shops offer 3-5 or more types of single-origin coffee beans for your selection:

Generally, you can first choose by region: African, American, or Asian beans

Representative examples: Mandheling's bitterness, Yirgacheffe's citrusy acidity, Costa Rican honey process sweetness

Then, you can briefly understand several common bean varieties: if you prefer something more acidic, choose Kenya or Yirgacheffe; if you prefer something richer and fuller-bodied, select Blue Mountain or Mandheling. There are also sweet beans like Geisha, which offer floral and sweet potato flavors.

Colombia, Nicaragua, and Brazil present chocolate, nut, and caramel notes

Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Rwanda present sweet, sour, nut, and lemon flavors, sometimes with astringent acidity

Central American Bean Flavor Characteristics

Latin American coffees are generally known for their balanced flavor profiles, with balanced nutty notes and some fruit characteristics, but the acidity is not as bright as African coffees, and the body is relatively full.

African Coffee Flavor Characteristics

African coffees feature rich aromas and captivating fruit acidity. Their bright acidity is lively and invigorating, but African coffees often have a somewhat lighter body.

Asian and Island Coffee Flavors

Asian beans have a fuller body than Central and South American and African beans, but with lower acidity. Their flavors often carry notes of aged wood, herbs, spices, and earth, with deep, mellow aromas predominating over bright acidic fragrances. Island beans are relatively light and gentle, with an elegant profile.
