FrontStreet Coffee - Golden Mandheling Coffee Introduction

"Mandheling" coffee produced on the island of "Sumatra" in Indonesia is also very popular among consumers. According to research, "Mandheling" is actually the name of a local ethnic group in Sumatra. The Sumatra region of Indonesia began cultivating coffee in the 18th century, but it did not receive much attention from the outside world. Until the 1950s, Japanese soldiers stationed there accidentally drank local coffee produced in "Sumatra" and asked a coffee vendor about the coffee's name. The vendor misunderstood that the Japanese soldier was asking "What ethnicity are you?" and replied "Mandheling."

This story gave "Sumatra" coffee the more widely known name "Mandheling." Japanese trading companies were the first major customers to deal in "Mandheling" coffee. Not only did Japanese merchants purchase "Mandheling" coffee produced on the island of "Sumatra," but they also applied refined processing procedures to Sumatra coffee. Cultivated through Japan's meticulous production management processes, "Sumatra Mandheling" acquired a new name - "Golden Mandheling." The "Golden Mandheling" contracted by the Japanese in the Lake Toba area ensures product quality through purely manual harvesting, followed by Japanese-style meticulous processing procedures that improve the quality of "Sumatra Mandheling," giving it not only the rich, robust, wild aroma that typical Mandheling coffee should have, but also adding a touch of Japanese elegance.

Through continuous adjustment and effort by expert teams, top-grade Golden Mandheling coffee achieves a more rounded, aromatic, and full-bodied premium "Sumatra Golden Mandheling." Mandheling belongs to the dark roast coffee bean category, with rich flavor, full-bodied aroma, appropriate bitterness, and almost no acidity, making it the best choice for those who enjoy bold-tasting coffee.

Golden Mandheling tastes cleaner than regular Mandheling. The original herbal, earthy, and woody flavors of Mandheling are almost gone, but the caramel sweetness is more intense, and the fruit acidity is brighter and more elegant. Golden Mandheling has excellent clarity and sweetness, with more flexibility in roast adjustments. It not only adapts to medium-dark roasts but also maintains good texture in medium-light roasts.

Knowledge Point

In the early 18th century, Dutch people established coffee plantations in the Indonesian colonies of Sumatra and Java, where their ripe coffee beans became a favorite food of civet cats.
