FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Peaberries

Coffee flowers are plants that possess both male and female organs, belonging to the Rubiaceae family under the order Gentianales. Coffee beans themselves, before roasting, are the core seeds of coffee fruits. They can grow on their own when falling into the soil, and even a single tree can produce coffee fruits.

Therefore, the distinction between male and female is purely fabricated and imaginary.

There are approximately three reasons for the formation of peaberries:

1. Growing at the very tip of coffee branches may lead to the development of peaberries within coffee fruits.

2. Due to survival competition and nutrient acquisition, one bean "eats" another bean, developing into a peaberry.

3. Coffee fruits suffer from pests and diseases during growth, leading to incomplete internal development and the formation of peaberries.

Peaberries on a coffee tree account for only about 5%-10%. Savvy merchants separately select and sell peaberries, and due to their rarity, they can command higher prices.

So do peaberries taste better?

With their round shape, peaberries roll more easily during roasting, allowing for more even heat distribution. Therefore, most people find that roasted peaberries offer superior flavor. In fact, the coffee we usually drink is a mixture of peaberries and regular beans. Moreover, coffee flavor expression varies due to factors such as harvest time, processing methods, and roasting techniques. In conclusion, what suits you best is the best choice.

Peaberry coffee beans are typically used for single-origin coffee, such as Kenya PB. It's commonly believed that peaberries have better flavor and texture than regular coffee beans, but this is actually not the case.
