FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Single Origin vs. Blend

What is Single Origin Coffee?

Single origin coffee is commonly referred to as "black coffee" in less professional terms, and is typically consumed without sugar or milk. Previously, single origin coffees like Blue Mountain, Colombian, and Brazilian were frequently mentioned. Nowadays, we also have coffees like Mandheling, Kenya, Yirgacheffe, and others. In fact, most of these coffee names are derived from the origin of the coffee beans. When people used to drink single origin coffee, they might have been accustomed to adding sugar and milk because they found the coffee too bitter. However, each coffee bean grows in different environments and carries its own unique characteristics. Generally, when drinking single origin coffee, it's best to first taste the original coffee without sugar or milk.

Single origin coffee refers to coffee beans from a single origin and single variety. Single origin coffee can be traced back to its original source, not just the coffee-producing country, but even the specific plot where the coffee was grown. By getting to know coffee farm owners, delving deep into coffee origins, understanding the stories of coffee-producing regions from the source, and purchasing green beans. Here, we also distinguish between specialty-grade single origin coffee and commercial-grade single origin coffee.

What is Blend Coffee? First, let's understand Specialty Coffee

Specialty coffee is made with Espresso as the base, then milk is steamed to create foam, and other ingredients such as cream, chocolate sauce, milk, caramel syrup, etc., are added to create coffee drinks like cappuccino, latte, con panna, rainbow iced coffee, caramel macchiato, etc. Specialty coffee is generally made with blend beans to achieve a more balanced and rich flavor.

What is Blend Coffee?

Blend coffee, also known as mixed coffee or comprehensive coffee, is now almost entirely in the category of popular Italian coffee. For example, Starbucks' XXX blend coffee belongs to this category. We generally refer to coffee made by mixing two or more different varieties of coffee, or the same variety but with different roast levels, as blend coffee.

Famous blend coffees include Blue Mountain flavored coffee, Mamba coffee, and Italian espresso. These types of coffee belong to blend coffee. Unlike single origin coffee, which is typically named after its origin, mixed coffee is generally named after the brand or flavor. Blend coffee usually uses commercial-grade coffee beans and is often much cheaper than many single-variety coffees.

For coffee blending, mixing green beans before roasting is called "raw blending," or blending after roasting the beans is called "roasted blending." People who love Italian coffee, such as Americano, latte, and similar drinks, use blend coffee beans.

Knowledge Point: Single Origin Espresso is also known as SOE
