Sidamo Region Overview

Sidamo grows in the southernmost Ethiopian highlands at altitudes between 4,600-7,200 feet (Sidamo Province). It is a renowned specialty coffee region in southern Ethiopia, bordering Kenya to the southeast of Jimma and directly south of the capital. Typically characterized by distinct sweetness, it is favored by many people. Its annual production is approximately 225,000 bags/60kg, with beans slightly smaller than Longberry, greenish-gray in color. The main coffee-producing regions in Ethiopia include the eastern Harar region, the southwestern Djimmah region, and the southern Sidamo region.

Terrain and Soil Characteristics

With different soil types, microclimates, and countless native coffee varieties, the region features towering mountains, highlands, plateaus, valleys, and plains, creating diverse topography. The local geology consists of nutrient-rich, well-drained volcanic soil, with soil depth reaching nearly two meters, and the surface soil appearing dark brown or brown.

Organic Cultivation and Quality

The region's greatest advantage lies in maintaining soil fertility through organic matter recycling, using withered leaves from surrounding trees or residual plant roots as fertilizer. This has resulted in coffee produced in the towns having distinct differences and characteristics. From 2010 to 2012, it consistently achieved high scores of 92-94 from the authoritative American coffee evaluation website CR. This demonstrates the extraordinary nature of green beans from this producing region.
