FrontStreet Coffee - Brazil Minas Gerais Carmo de Minas Serra das Três Barras Estate Natural Yellow Bourbon Introduction
Serra das Três Barras Estate, abbreviated as TBS Estate, has won multiple awards in the Brazil Cup of Excellence (CoE) competition. Its name originates from the location where three high mountain rivers converge.
TBS Estate is extremely meticulous in harvesting and processing, especially the competition batches. Not only do they use the traditional derriça method, but they also employ the most delicate hand-picking method from Central America. After harvesting, coffee cherries are sorted by density, then undergo pulped semi-washed processing. They use a refractometer to determine optimal ripeness in advance. Meanwhile, the estate has a specific lot prepared exclusively for competition. The coffee quality of this estate is already outstanding, yet they can further select competition-exclusive areas, which is truly amazing. Ralph told me that among his neighbors, at least 10 estates have placed in the top 5 of CoE, and everyone prepares for competitions with such dedication!
The small producing region of Carmo de Minas, considering the terrain of Brazil's coffee-producing areas, belongs to high-altitude regions with an average elevation between 1,040 and 1,280 meters. The surrounding mountain terrain is exceptionally beautiful, with more varied topography. This region is blessed with talented people—counting the national winning estates in Brazil's CoE over the years, many top estates come from this small producing region. The average annual rainfall here is between 1,350 and 1,500 millimeters, with distinct dry and rainy seasons, and an average annual temperature of only 18°C, making it extremely suitable for coffee cultivation.
TBS Estate is owned by José Wagner Ribeiro Junqueira. This family plays an important role in the small farmers' cooperative in the Carmo de Minas region, enthusiastically promoting the cultivation of high-quality coffee and research on processing methods. Due to its location on high-altitude slopes, Brazil's common mechanical harvesting method is completely unusable here. The estate uses traditional manual derriça method harvesting (also translated as hand strip method). The estate covers approximately 175.2 hectares, but the coffee cultivation area is less than 40 hectares. When asked why the cultivation density is so low, they said: "Because this is better for coffee quality." Meanwhile, their expansion cultivation plans must be carefully planned. They will only gradually increase when they are certain that quality can be maintained or even improved. Ralph is a very special and not greedy person.
