Starbucks Rwanda Sholi Coffee Class: What's the Story Behind Starbucks Rwanda Sholi Coffee
FrontStreet Coffee - Rwanda Sholi Coffee Story
Rwanda Sholi.
The Sholi Cooperative in Rwanda, originally named Abateraninkunga ba Sholi, where Abateraninkunga means "mutual assistance" and Sholi is the name of the village. The community is located approximately midway between Rwanda's Lake Kivu (Lake Kive - you might remember a previous Reserve Congo Kivu offering) and Kigali, in the Muhanga region. Sholi was established in 2008 when approximately 30 women from the Sholi Cell in the Muhanga region jointly founded it - the power of women! (Ming had previously written about Reserve Colombia La Cacina, which was similar in this regard.)
In the past decade, the community has been dedicated to improving their coffee and community economic development. In 2015, the cooperative obtained Fairtrade certification; in 2016, it received Rainforest Alliance certification; and on March 29, 2018, Reserve Rwanda Sholi was introduced to everyone at the Shanghai Roastery. The Sholi Cooperative currently has 332 members, with 203 being women, including two of the five board members. Additionally, the cooperative has now planted over 400,000 trees.
Mutual assistance has made the cooperative increasingly strong.
The cooperative is women-led but has incorporated male members in its subsequent development, which helps make work distribution more reasonable and improves efficiency. In 2016, the cooperative received funding to establish a community center and health center, providing basic services to everyone. Of course, the Sholi Cooperative has its own processing station.
Sholi's coffee processing is similar to other coffee cooperatives in Rwanda, using the washed method. After delivering coffee cherries to the washing station, the coffee is de-pulped and fermented for about 2 days, then rinsed and soaked for 24 hours, washed again, and finally placed on raised beds similar to those in Kenya to dry.
