Laos is located south of China's Yunnan province and west of Vietnam. Historically, they were all French colonies. The arrival of the French brought war, brought France's exquisite and unique lifestyle, and also brought relatively advanced Western civilization. In the scenic and fertile Bolaven Plateau, the French, with rigorous and scientific botanical theories, discovered that this land had high-quality soil for growing coffee. Thus, at the end of the 19th century and early 20th century, coffee tree seeds were sown on the Bao Song Mountain of the Bolaven Plateau. From then on, the unique natural growing environment of southern Laos allowed Lao coffee quality to present a kingly demeanor among the best coffees in Southeast Asia.

Lao coffee is famous for its delicate and complex aroma and rich taste, with citrus fruit and floral notes in the aftertaste, and faintly carrying the sweetness of chocolate. Compared to most heavily flavored Southeast Asian coffees, its taste is fresher, gentler and longer-lasting.

Coffee Cultivation Periods and Varieties in Laos

Around 1900, French settlers began planting coffee in the Bolaven Plateau of southern Laos, mainly Arabica varieties of Typica and Bourbon.

From 1940 to 1990, due to the influence of external factors such as wars, agricultural disasters (mainly frost and leaf rust), and national policies, coffee varieties were gradually replaced by the more disease-resistant and higher-yield Robusta varieties, with a small amount of Liberica varieties as well.

After 1990, Arabica varieties began to receive renewed attention.

Currently, Arabica still accounts for the majority of production.
