What Does Decaf Coffee Bean Mean? Is It Just Low Caffeine? A Brief Analysis of Whether Decaf Coffee Is Healthy
FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Decaf Coffee
The caffeine content in Arabica coffee beans accounts for about 1.2% of the bean weight. According to regulations from European and American food and drug administration authorities, coffee must contain less than 0.03% caffeine relative to the coffee bean weight to be called decaffeinated coffee.
Natural Low-Caffeine Varieties
This refers to natural varieties of low-caffeine coffee. Because the natural varieties of low-caffeine coffee currently sold on the global market all contain caffeine levels between 0.4% and 0.9%, although this is half the caffeine of regular Arabica varieties, according to the 0.03% standard, the natural low-caffeine coffee sold on the market today can at best be called natural semi-decaffeinated coffee.
Decaffeination Methods
Currently, there are three main technical methods for removing or extracting caffeine: supercritical CO2 processing, solvent extraction, and the Swiss water process. Among these, the technology-driven supercritical CO2 processing method can achieve a caffeine removal rate of 96-98%, making it the most efficient processing method.
Quality Considerations for Decaf Coffee
There are various methods for making decaf coffee, and technology continues to improve. While the ability to remove caffeine has increased, this also means that more and increasingly toxic chemical reagents are being put into use. Caffeine itself contributes more or less to the flavor and mouthfeel of a cup of coffee. Selectively eliminating certain substances from coffee beans means simultaneously removing coffee flavor. As technology for selective substance extraction and removal becomes more advanced, people are paying more attention to whether the chemical reagents used are harmful to health.
The Value of Decaf Coffee
Decaf coffee is still coffee. The nature of choosing decaf coffee is no less significant than buying regular coffee, and in fact, the passion for coffee when buying decaf may be even more sacred than when buying regular coffee.
A Note on Decaf Coffee Drinkers
Key point: I believe that people who drink decaf coffee are great. They don't drink coffee just for caffeine intake, but are truly people who love coffee.
