FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Guatemala Finca Aurora Coffee
Rainforest Coban is located in the central region of Guatemala and is one of Guatemala's eight major coffee-producing areas. Coffee from the Coban region shows distinct differences compared to other Guatemalan producing regions. This area receives abundant rainfall throughout the year, divided into at most two seasons: the rainy season and the very rainy season.
This batch from the Coban region comes from Finca Aurora's Rabinal Lot, situated in the mountainous area of Cubulco town, Baja Verapaz province. Verapaz province can be divided into upper and lower sections, while the estate also has other batches from the Santa Cruz Verapaz mountainous area in Alta Verapaz province.
Finca Aurora has been cultivating coffee since 1887, with growing areas located in subtropical cloud forests. A cloud forest is a tropical or subtropical montane rainforest characterized by dense and continuous tree coverage, frequently or seasonally surrounded by clouds and mist. The forest floor and vegetation are often covered with abundant moss, representing a special geographical environment and climate. The average altitude here is approximately 1,450 meters, while this specific batch comes from 1,700 meters altitude. The estate has made unremitting efforts in environmental protection awareness and practices, earning Rainforest Alliance certification.
Finca Aurora was established in the 19th century and was operated by German immigrants at that time. During the 20th century, in addition to producing coffee, the estate also produced jute bags, glass products, and even molasses. The estate still maintains its original architectural appearance and early antique production equipment today. About 15 years ago, Italian investors purchased this estate, modernized the production equipment, began planting new coffee varieties, expanded the coffee tree cultivation area, and focused more dedicatedly on coffee production, thereby providing higher quality coffee.
