FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Guatemala Antigua Region

Guatemala's Coffee Regions

Guatemala has a total of 8 coffee regions: Huehuetenango, Antigua Classic, Atitlan, New Oriente, Fraijanes Plateau, San Marcos, Rainforest Coban, and Acatenango.

The Antigua region is located in the Antigua Valley area, which features rich volcanic soil, suitable humidity, ample sunlight, and cool nights - unique characteristics of this region. The Antigua Valley is surrounded by three volcanoes: Agua, Fuego, and Acatenango. Volcanic ash from eruptions enriches the soil in the Antigua region with minerals. Volcanic pumice helps retain moisture, overcoming the drawback of low rainfall in the Antigua region; dense tree shade protects against occasional frost damage. [Characteristics] Rich flavor, satisfying, medium to high acidity, high density, with a wonderful smoky taste.

Antigua Classic

This brings us to Guatemala's most famous Esmeralda coffee beans. First, let's understand what makes Guatemala's coffee so smooth and memorable.

Guatemala Esmeralda coffee presents a smooth, gentle acidity based on floral notes. The Esmeralda produced in Guatemala Antigua mainly consists of flat beans and round beans, both featuring floral notes as the primary characteristic, with bright acidity, sucrose and chocolate aftertaste. The difference is that flat beans have a more subdued overall flavor compared to the intensity of round beans, with rich acidic flavors that exude a calm and composed character.

The unique floral notes of Esmeralda require careful handling during the light roasting stage to release its elegant floral aroma. The rich fruit acidity, with roasted beans possessing extreme floral notes, allows you to discover the intense sucrose aroma dancing in your mouth when experienced through smell, smoothly integrating into crystal clarity. As roasting continues into the dark roast stage, complex flavors emerge, with spices mixed with caramel-scented nutty notes, while floral notes still appear in the finish.

When drinking Esmeralda coffee made from flat beans, the impact of sweetness and acidity is not as intense as with round beans. The flavor is simpler, with a softer, smoother mouthfeel, and within the same crystal clarity, it emits floral and spicy aromas that are more tranquil and fresh. When drinking, you can experience bright fruit acidity variations, followed by chocolate and sucrose aromas remaining in the cup bottom, with caramel notes mixed with nut flavors that leave a lasting impression of the coffee.
