FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Guatemala Atitlan Processing Plant

To the south of Lake Atitlán are three famous volcanoes, all exceeding 3,000 meters. The westernmost is San Pedro Volcano, while the prominently visible one by the lake is Toliman Volcano, which actually has a double crater. The main volcano, Atitlan Volcano, reaches 3,537 meters high. Beyond the volcanoes, the terrain descends continuously to the plains facing the Pacific Ocean.

Lake Atitlán is one of Guatemala's main volcanic coffee regions. The lakeside soil contains good organic matter, making it fertile and suitable for coffee cultivation. Since most coffee is planted along the lake's steep slopes upward, this terrain is unfavorable for soil and water conservation. Farmers often struggle with how to maintain sufficient moisture in the land. Early deforestation and local slash-and-burn farming practices have also caused significant environmental damage.

The steep terrain naturally makes water retention difficult. Although this lake is very large, water cannot be drawn entirely from it for use. Fortunately, there are 19 important private nature reserves around the lake, covering 6,000 hectares of primary forest and coffee plantations. Almost all practice shade-grown coffee cultivation and organic farming methods, which has greatly protected the natural environment of Lake Atitlán. They use methods of protecting primary forests to enrich water resources and employ artificial construction techniques to establish soil and water conservation, and even hydroelectric power. These efforts have achieved tremendous results. Mainly Arabica varieties and Typica derivatives are planted here.

Lake Atitlán is one of Guatemala's four volcanic coffee-producing regions. The surrounding soil is very fertile, and this area contains some of the highest-altitude farms in the region. Most extend from the slopes down to the shores of Lake Atitlán, where the elevation still reaches 1,500 meters. This is also Guatemala's largest and most famous high-altitude volcanic lake.

Guatemala Atitlan Cerro Oro

Cerro Oro coffee is cultivated collectively by local small farmers, who send their harvested coffee to centralized processing plants for subsequent processing procedures. The centralized management model of processing plants enables strict quality monitoring of coffee, thereby producing consistently high-quality Guatemala coffee.

Knowledge Point: Most coffee growers and producers in Guatemala can be considered descendants of the Maya people, and they themselves prefer to be called as such.
