FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Gesha Village Gesha
Gesha coffee is particularly particular about its growing environment, requiring high altitude, cloud and shade, fertile soil, and sufficient accumulated temperature. Aurora Coffee Estate is located in the northwestern corner of Chiriqui Province, Panama, with an average altitude of 1625 meters, average annual temperature between 16°C and 25°C, and average rainfall of approximately 3500 millimeters. The plantation is semi-shade grown, with tree species all from local unique varieties, some of which are high-altitude Hass avocado trees. It is precisely this unique environment and climate that can cultivate the king of coffees.
The reason why Gesha is more precious than gold is because of its extremely low yield and the need to participate in bidding, making it very difficult to obtain Gesha green beans. The growing environment requirements for Gesha coffee are extremely high, requiring a nearly perfect location: high altitude, sufficient rainfall, mild climate, and other key natural factors necessary for producing quality coffee. Bench Maji, the area in southwestern Ethiopia near South Sudan, has many places called Gesha Village, which is also the most likely area to find the original Gesha.
Adam followed Willem Boot to start "exploring" in the forests around the estate, and in a jungle magically enveloped by dense forest, they discovered multiple wild tree species. What surprised them most was the wild Gesha. Later they learned that this was the Gori Gesha forest, the place where Gesha was first discovered. So they collected seeds from the original Gesha trees, screened them, and then planted them in Gesha Village. They decided to establish the estate here and named it Gesha Village Coffee Estate, a 475-hectare coffee farm located about 12 miles from the Gori Gesha forest.
Gesha Village is also testing various processing methods, including dry fermentation and wet fermentation, various honey processes, etc. Among many coffees, the floral aroma and intense sweetness of tropical fruits are the consistent characteristics of Gesha.
To highlight the characteristics and aroma of this coffee bean, light roasting is used, as this roast level can better bring out the inherent qualities of the bean. Too dark a roast would damage the floral aroma and fruit acidity.
Gesha Village is located in western Ethiopia, not far from the premium producing region Yirgacheffe. As for the relationship! Ethiopia is the birthplace of Arabica, and Gesha is a derivative variety of Arabica. This makes the relationship between Gesha and Arabica clear!
The dry aroma is wine-like and apricot, while the wet aroma has sweet orange juice notes, jasmine fragrance, sweet peach, wine aroma, pineapple, bright and rich. The sip reveals citrus, tropical fruit aromas, ripe fruit notes, berry hints, citrus, light fermented wine aroma, with clear and bright acidity, smooth texture, grape, maple syrup, wild ginger flower, delicate fruit acidity, clean and balanced mouthfeel, and a lingering, lively fruity sweetness in the aftertaste.
Knowledge Expansion
In the original forest locally called Gori Gesha, samples very similar to the original Gesha variety being cultivated at the Mule Estate were discovered.
