The Geisha variety was first discovered in 1931, growing wild in the Geisha forest of southwestern Ethiopia. Over the course of nearly a century it travelled across Africa to Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Costa Rica, and in 1970 it was brought to Panama to be cultivated.
