FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Indonesia's Mandheling
Indonesia, as Asia's only top-tier coffee producing region, possesses a unique coffee culture and history. Indonesia is a major coffee-producing country, but Arabica beans, which have undergone many hardships, only account for 10% of production. Mandheling belongs to these rare Arabica beans.
These trees are planted on hillside slopes between 750 and 1,500 meters above sea level. The mysterious and unique Sumatra imparts Mandheling coffee with low acidity, rich aroma, full-bodied texture, and intense flavor, with a sweet aftertaste that carries subtle hints of chocolate and syrup.
Sumatra Coffee Beans Represent Courage
The richness of Mandheling carries a very masculine feeling. High-quality, first-grade Mandheling coffee has very light acidity, much like the subtle acidity of flowers and fruits. In addition to the characteristic mellow taste of Indonesian coffee, it also has a bitter-sweet flavor that is deeply loved by those who enjoy dark roast coffee. The reason why vintage Sumatra Mandheling coffee is called "vintage" is because it is stored in cellars for three years before export.
However, vintage coffee is by no means stale coffee, but rather specially processed, slightly pale-colored coffee. This type of coffee is richer, with reduced acidity but increased body, a longer aftertaste, and carries strong spice flavors—sometimes pungent, sometimes walnutty, and sometimes chocolaty.
It has a rich and solid texture with pleasant acidity. The aroma is mellow, with moderate acidity and abundant sweetness that is quite intriguing. It is suitable for dark roasting, emitting a rich fragrance. The gentleman of coffee—Sumatra Mandheling—Mandheling is a premium coffee bean grown on highland plateaus at elevations of 750-1,500 meters, with the first-grade Mandheling from Takengon and Sidikalang being of the highest quality.
Mandheling represents a kind of masculinity, offering a feeling of hearty satisfaction, unrestrained freedom, and the spirit of roaming the world. This flavor captivates men, symbolizing a spirit of perseverance and the great character of being able to take on and let go.
Some say Mandheling is heavy and intense, like the Caesar of coffees—its iron hooves trample ancient desolation, galloping across the distant horizons of yellow sands. Others say Mandheling is gentle and approachable, capable of making even the most hard-hearted men willingly surrender to its gentleness. No matter how people describe it, men become greater because of Mandheling; women become more charming because of Mandheling; life becomes full of achievement and pride because of Mandheling... the world becomes full of sunshine and love because of Mandheling. Perhaps this is just like how life becomes great because of ideals, and how life becomes extraordinary because of practice.
Knowledge Expansion
Unlike coffee beans named after their producing regions such as Kenya or Yirgacheffe, Mandheling is neither a region name, nor a place name, port name, or coffee variety name, but rather evolved from a story of misunderstanding.
