FrontStreet Coffee-Hario Hand Grinder Recommendation
Some friends ask FrontStreet Coffee what brand of grinder to buy for making coffee at home, so I'd like to introduce a Hario hand grinder!
HARIO Lightweight Hand Grinder is a product that has been on the market for a long time. Recently, a new transparent black model MSS-1DTB was launched, mainly changing the screw at the top where the handle connects to the central shaft to a hexagonal shape, increasing the product's durability. Everything else remains the same, with washable conical ceramic burrs that claim to be completely rinsable with water, allowing you to clean the grinder more thoroughly and say goodbye to annoying stale oil odors!
The HARIO MSS-1DTB Lightweight Hand Grinder's transparent base can hold up to 24 grams of coffee grounds, approximately enough for two cups of coffee. Generally, the coffee-to-water ratio for brewing coffee is between 1:12 to 1:15, so using 12 grams of coffee grounds can brew 140-180 ml of coffee liquid.
The adjustment knob is located below the grinding burrs, tightening clockwise and loosening counterclockwise. If you want to adjust to the right coarseness for pour-over coffee, first turn the knob to its tightest position, then loosen it by about one and a half turns. Because it's a conical burr, the ground particles will be somewhat diamond-shaped, and according to experience, this performs better in terms of mouthfeel and sweetness.
If you continue loosening the burr, you can easily disassemble it. The grinding principle of conical burrs uses the principle of different diameters top and bottom, causing coffee beans to gradually become finer as they are pushed from top to bottom, with particles smaller than the gap falling through. The MSS-1 ceramic burr measures approximately 19mm at the top and 31mm at the bottom, with a spiral design designed to catch and advance the coffee beans.
Using it is very simple: open the top lid, pour in coffee beans, close the lid, snap the stainless steel handle in place, and rotate clockwise. You'll feel significant resistance at first, but continued rotation becomes easier. It's recommended to use medium-dark roasted coffee beans, while very light roast beans with high hardness will be somewhat strenuous. Additionally, you don't need to wash the burrs with water after every use - only when the grinder hasn't been used for a long time, as the coffee oils attached to the burrs will oxidize and deteriorate, creating unpleasant stale odors. Only then do you need to rinse with water and detergent.
Knowledge Extension
Hand grinders are convenient to carry, more affordable in price, and can increase your enjoyment when making coffee. The feeling of grinding is quite stress-relieving~ It just takes more time and effort.
Knowledge Extension: Arabica has many subspecies, all derived from Ethiopia's oldest Typica and Yemen's Bourbon being transplanted to Central and South America or Asia and then varying.
