FrontStreet Coffee Coffee Brand Recommendations: Introduction to Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee
Blue Mountain coffee's ability to maintain its premium status today is closely related to local business policies. In 1932, Jamaica implemented policies to encourage coffee production, reducing the island's dependence on sugar exports. Unlike most coffee-producing countries that increased output by planting large quantities of high-yield but low-quality coffee, the local government prioritized quality over quantity. Therefore, Jamaica is one of the world's smallest coffee-producing countries. Brazil, the world's largest coffee exporter, produces approximately 30 million bags of coffee annually, while Blue Mountain coffee produces only about 40,000 bags per year.
Due to the tremendous fame of Jamaica Blue Mountain, counterfeit "Blue Mountain-style" coffee has appeared on the market, or simply called "Blue Mountain Coffee." These are typically blends created by shop owners themselves, which may not contain a single genuine Jamaica Blue Mountain bean. There's also a "Jamaica Blended Blue Mountain" coffee made from 30% Blue Mountain coffee and 70% of the finest Jamaica High Mountain coffee. Both of these coffees attempt to imitate Blue Mountain coffee but cannot achieve perfection.
The unique flavor of Blue Mountain coffee is related to the exceptionally favorable geographical location and climate conditions of the Blue Mountains. Located in the coffee belt between 25° north and south latitude, the Blue Mountains have fertile new volcanic soil, fresh and unpolluted air, year-round rainfall, and significant day-night temperature variations. Most importantly, every afternoon, clouds and mist envelop the entire mountaintop, not only providing natural shade for coffee trees but also bringing abundant moisture, making Blue Mountain coffee's taste and aroma exceptional.
Only coffee grown in the Blue Mountain region above 1,800 meters can be called Blue Mountain coffee. A coffee enthusiast I met in the United States has even more "stringent" requirements, insisting: "Only coffee grown at an altitude of 2,256 meters is true Blue Mountain coffee." Coffee beans grown in the lower mountainous regions of Jamaica island must be named "Jamaica High Mountain Coffee" due to their different quality. Additionally, the same coffee variety, whether planted in Hawaii, Kenya, Papua New Guinea, or any other place with similar climates, cannot produce the flavor of Blue Mountain coffee beans.
Therefore, to purchase authentic Blue Mountain coffee, you must choose reputable specialty coffee shops or online stores. Blue Mountain coffee sold in ground form is definitely fake - authentic Blue Mountain coffee is sold in bean form, so pay attention when purchasing. When buying coffee beans, you can ask if free grinding service is available - many coffee shops offer this service for free, allowing you to make coffee anytime, whether at home or in the office!
Knowledge Expansion
In the Blue Mountains, the legal production area for Blue Mountain coffee is the region above 2,200 feet. Wallenford only selects Blue Mountain coffee cherries grown at altitudes above 4,000 feet for processing.
