FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Yunnan Arabica Coffee
Yunnan Province is located in the "golden coffee cultivation zone" between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. The natural conditions of low latitude, high altitude, and significant day-night temperature differences enable coffee to thrive in this land. The Yunnan Arabica coffee produced here is of high quality and has gained wide recognition in the global coffee industry. Currently, in the southern and western regions of Yunnan such as Pu'er, Xishuangbanna, Wenshan, Baoshan, Dehong, and Lincang, these areas are all distribution zones for Yunnan Arabica coffee cultivation.
The terrain is dominated by mountains and slopes. Here, the fertile land, abundant sunshine, plentiful rainfall, and significant temperature differences between day and night create the unique characteristics of Yunnan Arabica coffee—rich but not bitter, aromatic but not overwhelming, with subtle fruit notes.
The main coffee cultivation areas in Yunnan include Lincang, Baoshan, Dehong, and Pu'er. The coffee beans produced in these regions are primarily exported to countries such as South Korea, Japan, Vietnam, the United States, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and several European nations.
Lincang
Lincang City is located in the southwestern part of Yunnan Province. The Tropic of Cancer runs through its southern part, bordering Pu'er to the east, connecting to Dali to the north, adjoining Baoshan to the west, and sharing a border with Myanmar to the southwest. Named after the Lancang River, it is a brilliant pearl on the southwestern border of China. Lincang has an annual average temperature between 16.8°C and 17.2°C, with distinct dry and wet seasons and abundant sunshine.
Dehong Prefecture
The birthplace of Chinese coffee, this region features coffee plantations at altitudes ranging from 1,000 to 1,600 meters, covering 2,000 hectares. More importantly, most coffee here is grown organically, making it among the highest quality coffee in the world.
Pu'er
The coffee capital, in 2012, Pu'er had a cultivation area of 43,433 hectares, with 18,000 hectares of harvested coffee, producing 36,500 tons annually, of which 24,700 tons were exported. The Pu'er coffee industry comprises 70 registered enterprises, 30,000 households, and approximately 1 million people. Pu'er, known as the "City of Tea for a Thousand Years," is an important coffee-producing region in China, with the largest cultivation area, highest production, and best quality, serving as an important distribution center for international coffee business.
Baoshan
Arabica coffee is the most famous coffee of Baoshan. This coffee took its first step in the late 1950s and quickly received positive feedback from London. In 1980, at the National Coffee Conference, it was recognized as the "National Coffee Champion." In December 2010, Baoshan Arabica coffee received A-grade certification and went through the China National Standard Administration process, being recognized as reflecting China's national geographical indication products.
Knowledge Extension: Most of Yunnan's current cultivation is Catimor, a hybrid of the Bourbon variety branch Caturra from the Arabica species and the Robusta species
