FrontStreet Coffee: Introduction to Yunnan Small Bean Coffee

The history of coffee cultivation in Yunnan can be traced back to 1892. A French missionary brought coffee seeds into Yunnan from abroad and successfully planted them in a valley in Binchuan County, Yunnan Province. To this day, more than 30 coffee plants propagated from these seeds are still flowering and bearing fruit in Binchuan County.

Large-scale coffee cultivation in Yunnan began in the mid-1950s, with a planting area once reaching 4,000 hectares. By the end of 1997, the province's coffee planting area had reached 7,800 hectares. Currently (2013), the province's planting area accounts for 70% of the national area, and production accounts for 83% of the country's total. Whether viewed from planting area or coffee bean production, Yunnan coffee has established a dominant position within China.

Major Coffee Growing Regions: Pu'er, Baoshan, and Lincang in Yunnan

Dehong

Known as the "Hometown of Chinese Coffee." As of 2011, the entire prefecture had developed a coffee planting area of 120,900 mu, accounting for 30% of the country's coffee planting area. In the next 3 years, the coffee planting area in Dehong Prefecture will reach 200,000 mu. The coffee planting altitude in Dehong Prefecture is all above 1,000 meters, with 30,000 mu planted on mountainous areas above 1,600 meters. Additionally, Dehong Prefecture primarily uses organic fertilizers and organic pesticides for coffee cultivation, resulting in high-quality coffee, making it one of the world's rare high-quality coffee producing regions.

Baoshan

Coffee cultivation in Baoshan began in the mid-1950s, with the first coffee plant introduced from Southeast Asia by the late patriotic overseas Chinese Mr. Liang Jinshan. The locally famous Lujiangba small bean coffee is of excellent quality. As early as the late 1950s, it was rated as first-grade in London, UK. In recent years, with the expansion of international trade, Lujiangba's small bean coffee has become even more renowned. European, American, and Arab countries, especially Britain, America, Egypt, Hong Kong, and Macao merchants all regard it as premium coffee, with products in high demand. In December 2010, after review by the China National Quality Inspection Administration, it was decided to implement national geographical indication product protection for "Baoshan Small Bean Coffee."

Lincang

The unique geographical location and climate conditions have made Lincang a focus of attention for many coffee enterprises. High-quality coffee seedling bases of 200 mu and 100 mu have been established in Mengding Town, Gengma Autonomous County, and Xinfu Farm in Lincang respectively, and coffee cultivation has been carried out in Gengma, Zhenkang, Yunxian, Cangyuan, and Yongde.

Pu'er

Pu'er, the land of tea, has a 150-year history of coffee cultivation. In the early 1990s, Pu'er City began to cultivate coffee as a dominant backbone industry for adjusting industrial structure and increasing farmers' income. Coffee is planted in 54 townships in 9 counties and 1 district of Pu'er City.

Knowledge Extension

Most of the coffee currently planted in Yunnan is Catimor, a hybrid variety between the Caturra branch of the Bourbon lineage in Arabica species and the Robusta species.
