The King of Africa - Peony / Buku Abel
While the entire world is going crazy for Geisha, Ethiopia has recently produced a remarkable coffee known as "Buku Abel - Peony."
In 2016 and 2017, this coffee won the championship in the natural process category of Ethiopia's national competition for two consecutive years. In 2018, it went on to win the championship of the entire African coffee competition. When cupping this coffee, bean hunters described it as drinking a sip of perfume, as if chewing wild ginger petals, thus naming this coffee bean after the king of flowers—Peony.
Buku Abel - Peony
It possesses a very unique floral aroma and saturated flavors of loquat and lychee. In the mouth, it's filled with fresh camellia fragrance and sweetness. Tasting a sip of the king of flowers will allow you to experience an incredibly fragrant, layered, and elegant flavor profile.
Buku Abel means "NEW" in the local Ethiopian language, signifying a new place. In this ancient country with over two thousand years of history and a population of one hundred million, blocked from Asia by the Great Rift Valley of East Africa, these highlands remain relatively undiscovered new land awaiting development, despite millennia of culture.
Buku Abel is located in southeastern Ethiopia, in a small village in the Guji Hambela region at an extremely high altitude of 2300m in a primitive forest, with a population of about 30,000. This small village, like most Ethiopian coffee gardens, grows amidst wild, primitive forests. Coffee farmers have passed down their traditions through generations, cultivating native bananas and interspersing local native coffee varieties among the banana trees. Most of the villages here are owned by the DEMSE estate family, living a leisurely life in the mountains and forests.
Red Cherry Ripe Natural Process
Due to the family's thousand years of experience, they can handle coffee post-processing with great precision. Every harvest season, residents pick dark red ripe coffee cherries from the primitive forests. The coffee produced in this region benefits from professional education—cherries are picked when they are fiery red and about to turn black, at which point their sugar content is extremely high. They are then sun-dried on bamboo-woven African beds under the abundant high-altitude sunshine. Coffee farmers constantly turn and tend to the coffee on the African beds, completing the process after 8-12 days of sun drying.
