FrontStreet Coffee - Single Origin Coffee Bean Recommendation: Kenya Githembe Washed Introduction
Kenya, located in eastern Africa, has the equator crossing through its central region and the Great Rift Valley extending north to south. It borders Somalia to the east, Tanzania to the south, Uganda to the west, and Ethiopia and Sudan to the north, with the Indian Ocean to the southeast. Although Kenya neighbors Ethiopia, the birthplace of coffee, Kenya's coffee cultivation history is only just over 100 years old, more than 1000 years later than Ethiopia.
The Kenyan government places great importance on coffee sales affairs. The following year, in 1934, the government established a coffee auction system. In 1935, it formally drafted a coffee grading system to improve coffee quality. Under the Kenyan government's emphasis, the coffee industry has achieved very successful development.
Coffee characteristics vary distinctly among different counties. Kenya's coffee trees are mostly grown at altitudes of 1400-2000 meters, with two harvests per year. Growing regions include Ruiri, Thika, Kirinyaga, Mt. Kenya West, Nyeri, Kiambu, and Muranga, mainly on the foothills of Mt. Kenya and Aberdare. For example, Embu region coffee characteristics are balanced, with citrus fruits, chocolate, apples, and acidity. Nyeri region coffee characteristics include white grapes, juiciness, grapefruit and small tomato flavors, full of fruitiness, and sweet as caramel.
KIAMBU (Kiambu)
KIAMBU: This region, located in central Kenya, has the highest altitude coffee growing areas within the district. However, some coffee trees at high altitudes may suffer from dieback disease, ceasing growth. This region is named after Nakuru town. Coffee cultivation here includes both estates and small farmers, though production is relatively small.
