Introduction to Common Coffee Bean Varieties | What are the Characteristics of Arabica Coffee?
Introduction to Common Arabica Varieties by FrontStreet Coffee
In 1753, Swedish scientist Carl von Linné first classified Arabica coffee (Coffea arabica). This coffee, with a caffeine content of 0.8-1.4%, originally comes from Brazil and Ethiopia. Arabica coffee is by far the first type of coffee discovered and cultivated by humanity.
Arabica beans have a richer aroma and a relatively smoother taste, sometimes with a sweet aftertaste of acidity. Among the three different coffee varieties, they have the most distinctive flavor, thus widely favored by coffee enthusiasts worldwide. Most importantly, Arabica beans have the lowest caffeine content! Their caffeine content is approximately half that of Robusta beans, making them a better choice from a health perspective.
Even the same variety of Arabica beans, when planted in different locations, will produce beans with various taste differences. Ethiopian beans are strong and full-bodied, with moderate acidity and fermented flavors. Brazilian beans have a round taste with moderate acidity. Colombian beans are smooth and mellow with light fruity notes. While Sumatran beans are acidic yet slightly sweet... Even coffee beans grown in the same country can have their flavor affected by factors such as climate, environment, altitude, soil composition, and so on.
Arabica coffee beans have a long history and are the originator of the coffee bean world. As early as the 6th-9th centuries AD, they began to spread through the method of "seed transportation." In terms of taste, Arabica beans are fragrant, rich and delicate, with pleasant acidity, smooth texture, less bitterness, and are very mild, liked by the vast majority of people. Arabica also has many derived varieties, which are also common varieties in specialty coffee.
Common Coffee Varieties:
Typica, Bourbon, Yellow Bourbon, Kenyan Bourbon (SL28, SL34), Catura, Pacas, Villa Sarchi, Maragogype
Additional Varieties:
Pacamara, Mundo Novo, Catuai, Geisha
Knowledge Extension:
Catimor is a hybrid of Catura and Timor; it resembles Robusta beans and also has many Robusta flavor characteristics. Through multiple crosses between Catimor and Arabica, the flavor has been improved. Catimor varieties are widely planted in Yunnan, China, and their flavor is gradually improving, slowly rising into the specialty coffee category.
