Kenya Coffee Growing Altitude, Latitude, and Geology

The equator runs through the middle of Kenya, with the country conveniently located within ten degrees north and south latitude. It belongs to the tropical growing region, with two rainy seasons annually, allowing for two harvests: 60% concentrated from October to December, and the remaining 40% from June to August. Coffee is primarily grown in the volcanic soil at altitudes of 1600-2100 meters around the capital Nairobi to the Kenyan mountain regions. This altitude is suitable for flavor development in coffee beans because the mountain temperatures are lower, growth is slower, allowing the aromatic components of coffee beans to fully develop, with more prominent fruit acidity and harder texture. This crescent-shaped, fertile coffee region is the main production area for Kenya's specialty beans.

NYERI (Nyeri)

Located in central Kenya, Nyeri is home to the dormant volcano Mount Kenya. The red soil of this region nurtures Kenya's finest coffee. Agriculture is extremely important here, with coffee being the primary crop. Cooperative societies composed of small farmers are more common than large estates. This region has two harvests, but coffee from the main season typically has higher quality.

Altitude: 1200-2300 meters
Harvest Period: October-December (main season), June-August (secondary season)
Varieties: SL-28, SL-34, Ruiru 11, Batian

Kenya Nyeri AA Washed

Time the extraction from the start of blooming, aiming for around 1 minute 50 seconds.

Knowledge Extension:

Kenya's coffee trees are mostly grown at altitudes of 1400-2000 meters, with two harvests per year. Growing regions include Ruiri, Thika, Kirinyaga, Mt. Kenya West, Nyeri, Kiambu, and Muranga, with the foothills of Mt. Kenya and Aberdare being the main areas.
