Cold drip coffee has always been one of the best-selling coffees at FrontStreet Coffee. Especially during summer, FrontStreet Coffee's baristas prepare cold drip coffee daily to ensure the refrigerator is always fully stocked with various flavors of cold drip coffee.
What is Cold Drip Coffee?
As the name suggests, cold drip coffee is extracted using "low temperature" and "slow dripping" methods. Temperature affects the decomposition rate of oils, acids, and sugars in coffee. Depending on how quickly this process occurs, the aroma, taste, and texture of coffee vary significantly. This is why different extraction methods can produce coffees of different qualities.
Characteristics of Cold Drip Coffee
Sweeter Taste:
Aroma molecules in coffee are extracted in a specific order—aromatic molecules are extracted first, followed by bitter molecules.
When brewing coffee with hot water, improper control of temperature and time often extracts too many bitter molecules, resulting in poor-tasting coffee. Cold drip coffee uses cold water for extended extraction, dissolving only the desirable aromatic molecules, resulting in a more fragrant, smooth taste that presents the coffee's optimal original flavor.
The absence of bitterness and acidity is the main reason why cold drip coffee is loved by many people.
Long Shelf Life:
Any food becomes more prone to spoilage when heated due to the destruction of its molecular structure. Hot-brewed coffee has an extremely short shelf life, with its taste beginning to deteriorate after more than 45 minutes. Cold drip coffee hasn't undergone a heating process, so its shelf life is very long. After extraction, it can be preserved in the refrigerator for two weeks, and the fermentation process during this time will create different layers of mellow flavor changes in the coffee.
Generally, it's recommended to refrigerate the extracted cold drip coffee for 12-24 hours before drinking for optimal flavor.
Many people say that cold drip becomes exceptionally mellow and smooth after a week, but FrontStreet Coffee doesn't recommend keeping cold drip for a week. After all, it's difficult to guarantee the coffee's condition after extended storage due to bacteria in the air or bottles. FrontStreet Coffee recommends consuming cold drip within 72 hours.
It's precisely because cold drip possesses all these advantages that some friends have left us messages asking which coffee beans should be chosen for making cold drip if they prefer rich, mellow flavors.
Based on FrontStreet Coffee's experience, if you enjoy rich, bitter, and intense black coffee, we recommend using deep-roasted FrontStreet Coffee's Golden Mandheling for cold drip. Because this bean uses the locally unique wet-hulling method, it often presents distinctive caramel, spice, herbal, and nutty aromas when brewed. When made into cold drip, it delivers a solid richness and fullness, like eating a piece of unsweetened dark chocolate.
