FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Panama Emerald Red Label
Hacienda La Esmeralda is a company specializing in premium coffee production, owned by the Peterson family. It is a renowned producer of award-winning Geisha coffee, setting a record for the highest price ever paid for auction coffee in 2004. Since then, it has continued to receive numerous coffee industry awards and has set several online coffee auction price records.
The fertile western volcanic soil, combined with mist from the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, makes Hacienda La Esmeralda a gem in Panama's coffee industry. Producing with the highest standards, investing time in attention to detail and flavor, sets them apart from other coffees around the world. The jasmine, lemongrass, orange, and tropical fruits grown in the high mountains of Boquete add beautiful floral and fruit elements to Hacienda La Esmeralda's specialty Geisha series coffee. Each micro-batch product has unique characteristics, outstanding quality, and excellent flavor.
After years of experimentation, Hacienda La Esmeralda discovered that only Geisha beans harvested from coffee trees grown at altitudes above 1,400 meters can display the special flavors that Geisha beans should have. They classify their Geisha beans into "Red, Green, Blue Label" grades based on planting altitude and actual cupping results.
In 2004, Geisha participated in auctions, and bidding wars pushed Geisha prices to astonishing levels. Looking back at the 2017 Panama Specialty Coffee auction, a batch of natural-processed Geisha from Hacienda La Esmeralda fetched an astonishing price of $601 per pound, almost double the previous auction price. This means that one kilogram of green beans costs as much as 8,900 RMB.
