As one of the world's most superior coffees, Blue Mountain Coffee has always been priced higher than many other coffee-producing regions due to its relatively low production volume. However, its elegant and rich coffee flavor has captivated generations of coffee enthusiasts. In this article, FrontStreet Coffee will discuss Blue Mountain Coffee with everyone.
What is the growing environment for Blue Mountain Coffee?
Authentic Blue Mountain Coffee is grown in the Blue Mountains, located in the eastern part of Jamaica. When the weather is clear, sunlight directly hits the azure Caribbean Sea surface, and the peaks reflect the brilliant blue light from the seawater, hence its name. The highest peak of the Blue Mountains reaches an altitude of 2,256 meters, making it the highest peak in the Caribbean region and a famous tourist destination.
What is Blue Mountain Coffee?
However, not all coffee grown on the Blue Mountains can be awarded the title of "Blue Mountain Coffee." Due to the variety of Blue Mountain Coffee - Blue Mountain Typica - only developing clear, balanced flavors at high altitudes, only Blue Mountain Typica grown in the 910-1,700m region of the Blue Mountains will exhibit such excellent taste characteristics.
These Typica plants grown below 910m altitude or outside the Blue Mountains will not possess the same charming coffee flavor characteristics. Therefore, those grown below 910m can only be called "Jamaica High Mountain Coffee" and "Jamaica Premium Coffee."
Areas above 1,700m are designated as nature reserves by the Jamaican government and cannot be used for commercial crop cultivation. Therefore, authentic Blue Mountain Coffee actually has limited production, around 900 tons annually. When distributed worldwide, the slightly higher price of Blue Mountain Coffee beans is understandable.
How to distinguish authentic Blue Mountain Coffee?
Also due to Blue Mountain Coffee's extremely high reputation, some merchants sell coffee products that are not Blue Mountain Coffee using terms like "Blue Mountain flavor," "Blue Mountain coffee taste," or "Blue Mountain flavor blend." To help consumers identify genuine Blue Mountain Coffee, the Jamaican government requires all exported Blue Mountain Coffee beans to be packed in wooden barrels, while the Jamaica Coffee Industry Board can issue certificates for all exported Blue Mountain Coffee.
There are three types of certificates:
(1) Quality certification issued by the Jamaica Coffee Industry Board
(2) Authorized sales certificate issued by Blue Mountain Coffee manufacturers
(3) Certificate of origin for Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee
Quality certification certificates indicate time and quantity. The Jamaica Coffee Industry Board randomly selects a package from submitted Blue Mountain Coffee for inspection. If it meets Blue Mountain Coffee standards, a certificate is issued.
Blue Mountain Coffee Brand Recommendations
Blue Mountain Coffee is mainly grown in the Blue Mountains regions of Saint Andrew, Saint Thomas, Portland, and Saint Mary. In the Saint Andrew region, there is Clifton Estate - Jamaica's oldest coffee cultivation area with over two hundred years of coffee growing history.
It is also the only estate in Jamaica that has received "Rainforest Alliance Certification" (obtaining this certification indicates promoting environmental responsibility, social equity, and economic development in farm communities, therefore exported Blue Mountain Coffee barrels feature the green frog certification logo)
At the same time, Clifton Estate can be said to be the most innovative estate in the entire Blue Mountain region. In the 2019-2020 period, it successively launched natural processed versions of Blue Mountain No. 1 Coffee and Blue Mountain Geisha Coffee. Previously, all Blue Mountain Coffee sold externally was washed processed Typica varieties.
Currently, the Jamaican Blue Mountain No. 1 washed Typica coffee beans sold by FrontStreet Coffee all come from Clifton Estate. FrontStreet Coffee's offline stores display certification certificates issued by Clifton Estate as well as Blue Mountain Coffee wooden barrels featuring the green tree frog (Rainforest Alliance Certification) logo.
How to brew Blue Mountain Coffee?
To bring out the rich, balanced characteristics of Blue Mountain No. 1 Coffee, FrontStreet Coffee recommends using lower water temperature for extraction, paired with a Kono dripper with slower flow rate, to ensure maximum extraction of coffee substances under low water temperature conditions.
To allow Blue Mountain Coffee to exhibit its mild richness, FrontStreet Coffee's stores use KONO drippers, paired with medium-coarse grinding (coarse sugar granule size / China No. 20 standard sieve 70% pass rate) and water at 88-89°C for extraction.
The extraction method is as follows: First pour 30g of water for blooming, with a blooming time of 30 seconds. Second pour to approximately 125g of water, then wait for the coffee liquid to drop. When it drops to half, pour the final water to reach 225g. End the extraction when all coffee has finished dripping through. The total extraction time is generally around 2 minutes and 10 seconds.
Hand-brewed "FrontStreet Coffee Blue Mountain No. 1 Coffee" flavor profile: Rich black chocolate and nutty flavors, creamy smooth texture, balanced acidity and bitterness.
