FrontStreet Coffee Shares: Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee Brands and the Origin of Japan's Purchase Priority

FrontStreet Coffee Editor: I'm sure everyone has heard of Blue Mountain Coffee. Today, FrontStreet Coffee would like to share why Japan has the priority right to purchase Blue Mountain Coffee and introduce the Blue Mountain coffee brands.

History of Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee:

The history of Jamaican coffee dates back to the 18th century. In 1717, King Louis XV of France ordered the cultivation of coffee in Jamaica. In the mid-1720s, Sir Nicholas Lawes, the Governor of Jamaica, imported Arabica coffee seeds from Martinique and began promoting cultivation in the St. Andrew region. Coffee trees were introduced to Jamaica and grown in the Blue Mountains, which are divided into high-altitude Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee, High Mountain Coffee, and Jamaican Coffee, with different grades determining different prices.

The Blue Mountains are located in the eastern part of Jamaica. Surrounded by the Caribbean Sea, on clear days when sunlight shines directly on the azure sea, the peaks reflect the brilliant blue light of the water, hence the name. The highest peak of the Blue Mountains reaches an elevation of 2,256 meters, making it the highest peak in the Caribbean region and a famous tourist destination. Located in the coffee belt, this area has fertile volcanic soil, fresh air free from pollution, and a humid climate with year-round fog and rain (average precipitation of 1,980 millimeters and temperature around 27°C). Such climate conditions have created the world-renowned Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee, as well as the world's highest-priced coffee.

Why Did Japan Have Priority Purchasing Rights?

In 1950, the Jamaican government established the Jamaica Coffee Industry Board, which sets quality standards for Jamaican coffee and supervises their implementation to ensure the quality of Jamaican coffee. The board grants special official seals to both raw and roasted coffee exported from Jamaica. Because Japanese loans were used to improve production quality, the market was thereby guaranteed.

According to 2013 export statistics from the Jamaica Coffee Board, among the limited Blue Mountain coffee bean quotas, 85% are exported to Japan, 5% to the United States, 5% to Europe, and 5% to other countries. However, in the global consumption distribution of authentic Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee, according to the International Coffee Association statistics, China accounts for 15% of consumption. This is because some Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee shares from Japan, Australia, and Europe are exported to Taiwan through directly-operated branches. Among these, Blue Mountain Coffee from Clifton Estate and Silver Hill Estate are particularly famous.
