At the back of our mouth, at the end of the hard palate, there are two holes. If you use your tongue, you'll feel symmetrical areas where the skin is rougher—this is the channel leading to retronasal olfaction.
We can use the method of sipping to quickly aerosolize the liquid, allowing retronasal olfaction to rapidly perceive the flavors of food and liquids in the mouth.
Another method is to keep the liquid in the mouth, letting it remain still in the cavity, and then push a breath of air toward the retronasal olfaction area. This makes it easier for the flavors in the mouth to be captured by the retronasal olfaction receptors.
The flavors perceived through retronasal olfaction are transmitted to the taste reflex area in our brain. If you frequently use this taste area and have retained some fruit or food flavors, you can make comparisons and describe the similar flavors contained in the coffee.
